Has anyone used or heard about the new Die Hard battery? I think it's called "Die Hard Platinum." Just curious more than anything.

I've seen them in the Sears ads, but know nothing about them. I only looked at the prices and figured they were a spiral cell like the Optima's. Apparently not after looking at the Sears website. All I did get was that they use "purer" materials and sturdier construction/casing, but there has to be more.

Unless I could find more info leading me to believe they are better, I would get an Optima for that money. Very good reviews from some forums I've been to. Even solving the dreaded "dimming headlight" issue with Saturn L's.

Really? I thought EnerSys made the new DieHard Platinum batteries (in Warrensburg, MO of all places - which is just Southeast of KC).

i used to work in a Sears Auto Center and left right as teh Platniums were rolling out. Sears stopped carrying the Optimas, all the DieHards are made by Johnson Controls, except for the Platium which is made by EnerSys.

the Platnium is an AGM battery, no fluid in it at all.

I have a hard time spending $179 for a battery, period. Why not just buy a few Costco or Walmart Maxx batteries for $60-ish each with a three year free replacement?

I put an Optima in my car awhile ago and it's been great so far.
What kinds of problems have people been having with them? From what I've not heard of anyone who has one and isn't happy with it.

What kind of quality control issues does Optima have? What other manufacturers have you been steered toward?

Remember that an Optima will handle roughly a 1300A discharge where as the Exide Orbital will do 2000A. Many people knock the Exide Orbitals just because they look like cheap imitations and also because Exide has some problems with their line or regular batteries. But make no mistake, the orbitals are made in Spain, have been using one since 2000 when they first came out and could not be more satisfied.

What else is there to report, my battery has been completely discharged to 0 by my carelessness, and it still has an OCV (open current voltage) of roughly 12.77, not ad since when it was new it had OCV of 12.85. It states on the battery to explicitly not charge it over 14.40V, both my older car and my new one produce roughly 14.70V and the battery seems to take that abuse fine.

I had it sit for 3 months without disconnecting the battery when I studied abroad in college and it fired right up, just as if it sat for a day.

As I said before, I went this way because I don’t like to see acid leaks within the engine bay area, I don’t like to deal with corroded contacts and for me batteries are fun to handle just because I know a little bit more and it’s fun to have batteries last 10 year, for me it’s more like a sport than anything else.
