According to news reports the government is building a massive new data center in Utah to store all of that information from the internet, telephone calls, etc., of all Americans. Suppose Congress decides to stop that program of gathering all of that information. What happens to the data center?

Hopefully Congress suspends funding for the construction to be completed, and it turns into a huge playground for rats.

That isn't going happen. That data center has been in the works for some time now, and our representatives in Congress have approved a LOT of money for its construction, and they knew why its being constructed. You don't know the purpose of that data center. Even if it were for the program that was compromised, those wheels are going to keep on turning.

It sits idling staffed with people monitoring uptime, empty spinning hard drives, swapping out fans and power supplies for 30 years. We pay for it just like we pay for other pulled pork.

I have another idea for it. If they really are recording every single telephone call, email, internet search, etc., than they should be able to crack down on cybercrime. If somebody reported they had gotten malware at a website they could view that website as it was at that time. And maybe catch the criminal. They should also be able to track the movement of laundered money and other stuff if they are recording everything. They would need some indication that something had happened because they can't go through all of that stuff. But once they had an idea that a crime had taken place and telephone calls, email, etc., were involved, they should be able to better solve the crime. Just a thought.

Right now the National Security Agency has a copy of the contents of my computer's hard drive and that entails a vast collection of Illustrated Parts Lists of all the engines that Briggs & Stratton ever made.

they are 10's of such data centers around the country.

This happens to be the biggest one.

You want to stop gov. destroy any law that protect us from terrorists , including patriot act.

They use it for another purpose. Data centers are going to be the lifeblood of the IT functions in government as they slowly transition off using old school and expensive locally hosted servers.

Terrorists have been using encryption and throw away cell phones for years. That's one reason why the Boston Bombers were not stopped.
The market for apps that encrypt and hide people will now explode.

Then we'll end up like Saudi Arabia and make BlackBerry messenger illegal because it's encrypted.

It's scary but Big Brother is watching.

So long as the website is not hosted from a cave in Afghanistan, you should be ok.

I think we need a discussion in Congress about all of this. Keeping records of all of the telephone calls, emails, web searches, websites, and everything else is a little insane and a violation of the 4th Amendment. I want to stop the terrorists also but what really stops them is smart thinking and legwork. Instead of basically considering every American (and people in foreign countries) as a suspect we need to focus on likely terrorists. There are ways of doing that. Let me count the ways.

1. If another country tells us we need to keep an eye on some people who come to the USA, maybe we should listen.

2. If an American citizen suddenly starts acting like he has been radicalized, and people notice this and report it to somebody like the police, maybe we should pay attention.

3. If somebody is making threats-well, all of this goes without saying.

4. This guy came from what country and he has known ties to certain people? Maybe we need to keep an eye on him while he is here. That is not profiling. If the guy has known ties to known terrorists-well, all of that goes without saying.

These are just a few hints and clues to the people who would establish these new fiefdoms that they want to build and command and make massive paychecks. Some people want to build fiefdoms that they can command. Other people just want to catch the terrorists that would hurt us. I have more confidence in the people who are willing to do the necessary legwork.

This just in gov't tyrants are VIOLATING our 4th Amendment Rights under the US Constitution. They are ALL GUILTY of treason.

Since we have NO true REDRESS OF GRIEVANCES anymore the ONLY solution is the 2nd Amendment.

It is becoming very obvious that the Administrative branch of the federal government went beyond the Patriot Act and was gathering information it was not supposed to obtain. They were supposed to be going after terrorists and not gathering information on every single American citizen and people in foreign countries as well. They gave them an inch and they took a mile.

I trust our government more than terrorists. If 9/11 was still fresh in our minds, we wouldn't hear so much about this.

Credit Card companies still know a whole [censored]-ton about your life - where's the tinfoil hat rants about that?

Go off the grid. Pay only with cash and never use a phone. Or live life in the 21st century.

You do not need to use the internet or cell phones to survive. Don't want people tracking you? Don't use them.
