from http://www.allpar.com/mopar/phoenix-engines.html See especially undelined text:

Canister-free oil filter element — prevents landfill, allows incineration; also eases DIY oil changes and prevents ham-fisted oil change places from "holing" or over-tightening the filter.

The advanced oil filter system eliminates oil spills and contains an incinerable filter element instead of the typical spin-on filters, which are disposed of in landfill sites; the filter is conveniently located on top of the engine.

Looks like a nice design. The proof will be in the execution. I look forward to seeing how it performs and lasts in the real world.

+1

I'm hoping to be buying another SUV 2012 or 2013. By then the new design engine will have some real world testing and any bugs ironed out.

Excellent.. I'm actually in shock here.. I thought they were doomed from building almost exclusively [censored] for the last few years. I can't wait for Mother Mopar to get back on track. I miss her!

I was looking at the allpar link from another thread and was very intrigued by the new Chrysler V6. Sounds like this is one step towards being a reputable company, now if they find something nice to put it in.

The one thing I didn't like about this engine is that the exhaust manifold is cast as part of the head. I recall that being done before, maybe on a Honda engine...whatever the case I can't see that being a great move, I guess time will tell.

Well I saw a video eaerlier about the new "durango" crossover, that will be revealed this summer. Hopefully Chrysler does well by the redesigned Grand Cherokee SUV and Durango CUV. They really need a home run if they want to survive. Even if SUVs aren't popular, one or two good vehicles is all that it might take to get the ball rolling.

Here we go again. Chrysler is still based in the US. Nobody had issues buying Chrysler because they were owned by Daimler (besides the sheer mismanagement and gutting of the company. Daimler is Germany fwiw)

Not true, you don't know what you are talking about. If you buy a Mazda, the profits go to MAZDA, not Ford, who owns mazda.

You don't know what you are talking about.

Ford owns about 38% of Mazda and would get about 38% of those profits.

Fiat is on schedule to own 35% of Chrysler by next summer and would get that percentage of the profit. If it meets the Feds targets eventually it will own a majority of Chrysler and get a majority of the profits.

And no, I did not consider Chrysler an American company when it was owned by Daimler either.

I think those engine cutaways are the coolest thing. How do they do that without making it look all butchered I wonder...

Toyota and Honda profits go to Japan, Kia goes to S.Korea. Most people buy products because of price, or they feel the product is high quality, buy the products regardless of where the profit goes. At least Chrylser, Toyota, and Kia are hiring American workers. It is a new Global Economy like it or not.

Don't get me wrong I'm not happy about it either. But if I worried about where profit went I wouldn't be buying much of anything. JMO

I had to look/search for a while to see where the oil filter goes. Not used to looking at/for a cartridge oil filter cover. I'm sure it's the wave of the future, or the now. Seems to make sense for many reasons. Charging more for the cartidge than canister doesn't though. Perhaps as they become more common the price will come down. Wouldn't bet on it though.

One question though, since the filter is at the top, where does the oil go that might drain down after the cover is taken off? Surely not all over the motor, or maybe I just don't understand how a cartridge filter works.
