This AM, like on the trip back from down east when it was -30C, the truck rolled over really slow.

I went out and started the M5 and it rolled right over and promptly fired up.

This is a new problem, as the Expedition normally rolls over readily in the winter, though this winter has been particularly cold.

The battery is an Exide. It isn't a small battery at north of 900CCA IIRC. I figure I'll be sending my wife up to CT to have it load tested but am betting the results are going to show it to be significantly down on capacity.

The battery was installed December 11th, 2009. At that point the battery that was being replaced was the original Motorcraft unit, which was going on 8 years old. The Exide is HALF that. Not impressed by that fact.

So, I'm thinking the replacement should be another Motorcraft, probably the BXT-65-850, which is 850CCA.

Thoughts?

I don't know about Canada but if your Wal-Marts have the Everstart MAXX batteries I'd pick one of those up. That or one of their Champions, thats what I have in mine. Best bang for the buck IMO

I don't shop at Walmart

Thanks for the tip though, appreciate the input.

I replaced a Motorcraft original battery in an 01 Windstar in 2011 It still tested and worked fine, but I figured it was about time to change it out as I live in northern Mn.
I replaced it at the dealer with a new Motorcraft, why switch from a winner.

Good Day,
Steven

Back in the taxi days, we had good luck with OEM batteries. The Chevs routinely saw ACs and the Lincolns got Motorcraft. In my Town Car, the Motorcraft lasted as long as I had the car.

Something to be said for OEM for sure. I replaced the OEM one in the M5 this summer. That battery was 12 years old.

The sad part is,the OEM batteries are made by the same companies that make the aftermarket ones.Somebody is getting taken on the replacements...

I recently replaced a 13+ year old Diehard in my E-150 with a battery from AAP. I'll be shocked if it lasts half as long.

I don't think the Exide ones are made by Johnson Controls though, who I believe makes the Motorcraft ones, correct?

doesnt mean they are made to the same specs.

I'd probably just get an harborfreight thunderbolt magnum.

ok maybe not.

an AAP gold for 80$ would probably be adequate.

if you want to spend big bucks .. oem or diehard platinum AGM.

I was going by what was on the fordparts.com website. Thanks for the link though, shows 875CCA and 1090CA. Looks like a pretty high capacity starter spinner

LOL!

I haven't had any luck with Exide built batteries-but all my Johnson Controls ones have been good, with the exception of leakage around the posts (felt washers fix that). Strangely enough, the MC battery in my '12 E-250 looks like a Johnson Controls-are they building Motorcraft batteries now?

I would do the BXT-65-850 or else a DieHard Platinum. One thing though with the Motorcraft, keep your receipt. Ford has instructed dealers to not do anything with the warranties unless the customer has the receipt.

They have been JC built for a long time, I have been working for Ford since April of 07 and it was that way when I first worked for Ford in 2003.

Whoever posted that PDF needs to delete it, way outdated. The BXT-65-850 is 850CCA, 1000CA and 150RC, just looked at my rack of them.

overkill that battery isnt officially overkill enough you should get a bsd-65
