Just bought a new JK Wrangler, and was thinking of running it for 3K miles before changing the oil (manual states 6K OCI), and then after that initial drain, following the recommended 6K interval.

The manual oddly enough, doesn't have a viscosity/temperature chart like every other manual I've ever looked at. They simply advise to use 5W-20 oil which meets the Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395.

My question is, will Rotella T 5W-40 be a suitable oil to use in this application, or should I use a different oil. Reading through forums, I've noticed Jeep owners are partial to Mobil 1. I've been running Rotella in my Honda CBR600F4i and really like it.

Here's some pics.

Very nice! The 3.8L is a stout engine and should serve you well. Stick with the recommended 5W-20. Valvoline Synpower 5W-20 or PP 5W-20 would be my picks.

Run what oil the manual says, and nothing wrong with changing it at 3k, running it for another 3k and then following the standard OCI as long as you aren't severe service.

Plenty of oils to chose from Pennzoil, Mobil, Castro...just about everyone makes a fine 5w20.

Personally, I'd find the warranty near and dear to me and would use the correct oil and keep reciepts. I like the 3000/6000 schedule you plan. Of course, a thicker oil would likely not cause problems.

I don't know if this applies to your Jeep, but Chrysler has issued TSB's in the past regarding the 5W-20 requirement.

Quote:
Technical service bulletin (TSB) - 09-015-04 and 09-013-04 - says: “Vehicles with the Multiple Displacement System must use SAE 5W-20 oil. Failure to do so may result in improper operation of the MDS.”

Since your manual only gives 5W-20 as an option, I'd stick with that, at least for through the warranty period.

I would do the 5W20 until the warranty is over then go to a 5W30. I am still not sold on the thinner 20 weight oils for engine longevity reasons...

Oh yea, very nice looking Jeep.

Ford Crown Victoria.

I've got a 2007. My engine was noisy with 20 weight oils. I now run Amsoil ACD diesel oil 10w30/30w. Change at 5K. Very quiet and smooth now. Others may say this is a problem. The engine runs real hot, in my opinion, and looks just like my 98 minivan motor, that spec'ed a 30w. This an OHV, pushrod motor. Not a fancy OHC motor. Doubt they changed anything to make it only suitable for the 20w other than EPA mileage constraints. BTW - I run this oil in everything, except my 2008 Scion (including my power equipment).

While you have to apply some "terms, conditions, and restrictions apply" extended thought to it, most of the debate about one grade, especially between 5w30 and 5w-20, doesn't hold much water.

1.) Every engine transitions through big envelope of common ground in viscosity for a good chunk of it's life ..the first 20 minutes.

2.) Oils of different viscosity become more alike as they warm.

3.) Between most 20 grades and at least some 30 grades, the difference in viscosity just isn't that much.

4.) Those distinctions in viscosity represent a small % of the typical operating event.

Now I realize accepting 1-4 is valid may be a stretch for many, but it's what the vast majority of engines see. Many will figure some way to find their service "niche" and exclusive to reject any of the aforementioned elements.

..but since we're debating an increase in visc (and a minor one-probably), then that view pretty much gets thrown out the window. The move to a 5w30 from a 5w20 could only simulate (purely from a viscosity standpoint) an operating temp of a slightly cooler "steady state" ...and all of that span fits into the range of acceptable +/- oil temps that any and all engines can encounter.

Thanks a lot for the replies. Maintaining the warranty is of upmost importance and a very good point. This is my first new car so it really hadn't occurred to me. Guess I'll go with Mobil 1 5W-20 and Purolators.

I have a 2008 wrangler and It runs well with any number of 5w20's. It is a durable low friction engine. Enjoy the jeep.

I have hardtop envy. My soft top is nearly 3 years old and is showing the wear from offroad trips and taking it off so many times. It's almotst bikini season!

I'd recommend Valvoline Synpower, but ultimately it's your choice.

Its a good engine, just stick with the Purolator filters as many others seem to have problems with the ADBV's working properly on this engine. I've run the RTS in my jeep without any issues, but as stated before, I'd stick with 5w-20 for warranty purposes. I know some guys have stated their engine was a little noisier with the mobil 1. Mines bee real quiet on the Kendal GT-1 Synthetic 5w-20. When I first bought mine, I changed oil at 600miles, 2,000, and then 3,000miles just to get all the junk out from break in. I've been going 5,000-6,000miles ever since. Oh, and if you have the automatic, install an aftermarket transmission cooler cause the factory one sucks. At the very least install a transmission temp gauge (I have an Interceptor Scan gauge). Check the JK forums for more info on them, you'll learn a lot of the problem areas of these things (every car has some).

Is Valvoline better than M1?

Funny you mention JK Forums, I joined a couple days ago; very informative ...and yes, there's a few posts there about members complaining of noisier engines when using M1, but I also noticed that most of the complaints were from persons who switched from dino oil to synthetic. Your oil change intervals sound better than waiting 3K, I might just go that route, thanks.
The Jeep has a standard transmission, not auto.

Yep, it's the same 3.8 engine that's used in the vans and other Chrysler products.

I'm not bashing JKForum, but just be careful. There are alot of people on there that will give you bad information, not to be a jerk, just because they don't know any better or have been misinformed themselves. I prefer the JKOwners forum myself as they seem to be straight forward and tell you how it is. They don't have near the # of members over there that JKForum does, but theres good information over there. You have to be very careful what you say on JKForum too, they are very quick to ban someone over there if you mention a company that does not sponser them, or say something negative towards someone. Theres good people over there though, I've gone wheeling with some of them, and had a blast.
