Hello all, great forums, tons of inetersting info... Have a question please;

Coming up on the 1st break-in oil change, (2K miles so far, but just want to get some clean oil in there) and was going to go with recommended 5W30. But going to use full synth oil.

Anyway, I looked at the filter - it is this itty bitty little "soup" can.

I worry about the tiny size of the filter; does anyone know of an "upsize" filter that I can use on the RAV 2.4 engine instead of the "stock" size?

Thanks all in advance!
Steve in PGH

Good luck! Hopefully!

Id suggest you get some LC and use it maybe after 5000 miles or so. It will keep the insolubles low, so even if there isnt a filter like this, things will be fine.

Try to get the Toyota Denso 90915-10004 made in japan oil filters, they are the yellow foam element type. In japan, it has superseeded all the paper element type.

denso first time fit filters are my favorites for toyota... nippon filters are pretty darn good too... available from any online parts discounter.

but I dont know much about your engine, etc.

Or if you're feeling rich, you can try the japanese made TRD oil filter for the AZ series 90915-SP010. TRD claims this filter filters away 45% more gunk.

4967 is stock.
4386 is same diameter as stock but longer.

3614 is toyota's V6 size filter.
3600 is the oversized version of that (same diameter, but longer)

also works is AC Delco pf53 and Motorcraft FL-400S

Toyota engineers know your engine oil flow charectoristics and needs better than anyone on this board. I personally would have confidence in their recommendation.

Steve,

In the case you have anything go wrong on the engine, Toyota will cause you some problems if you use anything other than what is spec'd for the outfit (Nice ride BTW

).

The "small" filter is all that is needed and works quite well. I'd recommend (and do with my own 2005 Toyota) that you stay with the correct oil filter.

I've used Toyota, Supertech, Bosch, STP and now trying Purolator and they all work well. The UOAs come back with everything looking great so it's doing a good job.

I'd also recommend that you go ahead and change the oil and filter out soon but go with a Dino or Blend and if you want to go syn (with 6m or 5k miles MAX OCI you'll not need a syn) wait till 5k miles.

My toyota used more Mobil 1 oil durning it's 5k run with it than any other oil I've used so far and the UOAs showed that the cheaper oils protect just as well for a LOT less. Also the MPG was the same as dino oil.

I've got quite a bit of on sale oil and the Toyota seems to like any of it.

Purolator now makes both their Pure One PL14477 and Premium Plus L14477 as a direct replacements for the 2005 RAV4's oil filter now, Steve. Same size as OEM.

Earlier this year, the Premium Plus wasn't available, so that's a new fitment from Purolator. I'll be running P-Plus when my stash of Toyota filters runs out.

Might also want to score a couple of these:

The SS-250 is the model you want. Get two of them, for full wrap-around coverage. Order one, and you'll only cover half the filter wall.

Do they work? Yes. Got 'em on my 2004 RAV now. I've cut open several OEM filters so far and have seen first hand how much stuff is collected on the wall of the filter. To me, especially with a filter this small, anything to keep the media flowing and metal out of the oil seems like a good idea.

Search the Oil Filters section of this forum for "Oil Filter Cutter" if you want some ideas on getting inside your filter. I have the Tavia 08340 cutter, available from:

http://www.globaltoolsupply.com

(Search on Tavia 08340)

The Tavia unit is expensive, but is very nicely made. There are other cutters for less money.

And here's a great RAV forum, btw:

Enjoy the new ride! And welcome!

Use the same one that came with the factory-fill oil until the warranty expires. If staying with conventional oil, I would stay with the brand the dealer uses.

Just my opinion!

Hey Steve,

Have an '05 RAV4 L myself. 600 miles, two weeks old. Have you done your initial change? What did you go with? I have a NAPA Gold 1396 waiting here. All I need now is to choose an oil.

IslaVistaMan,

I just ordered a set of filter magnets. Love the simplicity. Pricey, but ... worth it for peace of mind. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, kj

Thanks guys. I haven't even been under the car yet. Is there enough room for those FilterMags to attach? Hope so, I just ordered a pair ... which means I'm sticking with the factory-spec'd filter size.

Hi Kevin,

Did the initial at 1600 miles - couldn't wait! The yota filter that came off was their ***. Denso that looks to be of excellent construction, vs. their Thai-made filters that the dealer carries.

I used Mob-1 5W30 synth with the NAPA Gold 1396.

Physically, it did not look like there would be enough room to get a wider Camry or FL-400S filter in there w/out using a Dremel to get rid of a casting "nub" that protrudes into the way.

Good luck!

I would use an OEM filter and the oil viscosity Honda recomends just in case of a warranty issue. As to your evaluation of the filter size I'm sure that Honda engineers have much more data on their recomended filter than any on this NG.

I have a 3.3L V6 highlander and the filter is still small. I however find it do just fine. So far the only filter I have tried on the car other than toyota filter is the Pureone, and I don't feel much of the difference.
