Picked up some Neutra today at local Napa--was thrilled they had it--at 2.29 a bottle. Reading the bottle I noted that they recommend for "gentle cleanup" of the motor, a rate of 1 oz. to 1 qt. of oil in the sump. Has anyone tried this, and what were your results? Can it be used as a "budget" cleanup additive in lieu of ARX?

They had a big to-do about the number when I was in there and had to make a phone call, then figured it out finally. I have parted ways with my receipt unfortunately so I don't have it nor remember it. This Napa is 20 miles away from me, the one in town here doesn't carry it. If you want to get the part#, call the Napa in Paxton IL and talk to Tom. (217 area code)

I’ve used it; it works as advertised. In the since that it will dissolve carbonaceous goo in your engine and that it is ester based, saying that it is a “poor man’s” ARX might not be too far off base. But, remember, ARX has many unique abilities such as cleaning ring packs, cleaning behind seals, etc. Bob Winters, (Bob the oil guy Bob) has done lots of testing with Neutra. If you do a search under used oil analyses, you’ll find Bob’s experiments on his Ford Escort where he used Neutra in the oil.

Strjock. Paxton, danville, westville and Hoopston Napa's carry Schaeffers.
Brent. Napa corp is not a buyer of Schaeffer. Many Napa's like these are individually owned. These are the one's that may carry product.
Neutra is a great engine purge and cleaner, seal conditioner. A poor man's gift and a rich man's find. 1 oz per quart run 300-500 miles.

Neutra is a synthetic ester, whereas AutoRX is made from natural esters. According to manufacturer's recommendations, the Neutra would seem to accomplish it's task in a shorter period of time. However, it does have a lower flashpoint. It would be interesting to see before and after pics posted of a Neutra crankcase purge, similar to those posted of AutoRX treatments for real world comparison.

I have, through this website, found that Schaeffer's products deliver an excellant cost/benefit ratio.

I remember some of the discussion about Neutra versus Auto-RX. I think people seemed to be in some agreement that Neutra can clean an engine also, but may not restore seals like Auto-RX. However, Neutra is cheaper then Auto-RX and if the seals in your car or truck engine are not damaged, then maintaining engine cleanliness using Neutra may not be a bad idea. Plus you can use Neutra as a fuel system cleaner.

The smell of Neutra is powerful but not unpleasant. I personally find the smell of Fuel Power and Lube Control overpowering.

I really like Auto-RX (I think it saved me a lot of money too on seal repair) and I believe in Auto-RX. But Bob tested Neutra and Neutra seemed to work (and cost less). Personally I don't mind paying the not so bad price of Auto-RX. But if you think Auto-RX is expensive Neutra will probably do the same job (maybe not including repairing seal leakage).

I think those photographs are a pretty good indication that Neutra 131 works as an engine cleaner. Plus of course you can also use it as a fuel system cleaner.

If you have seal leakage Auto-RX might be a better deal.

Some other things to take into consideration-1) Neutra has a lower boiling point and maybe it would be better to use the Neutra right before a trip because it might be used up faster then Auto-RX; 2) Neutra can be used maybe 500-800 miles before an oil change; 3) Another way Neutra is cheaper is that you don't have to go through a dedicated cleaning technique-just put the proper amount of Neutra (I think it is 1 oz. per quart of oil) in some hundreds of miles before an oil change.

I think Bob said that Neutra should not be used all the time-just to get an engine clean and that is all. I believe it was also stated that Neutra might not do anything for seal leakage, although if the seal is cleaned then clean oil will lubricate the seal and the seal should be repaired (as long as there is not actual physical damage to a seal such as a tear).

Neutra is cheap enough so that it could be used to clean up an engine in a car or truck that will be for sale.

My guess based on the available evidence is that Neutra used once a year would probably keep an engine clean enough. Plus of course the stuff can be used as a fuel system cleaner.
