Need Some Prayers

I went through something similar. I was on the ventilator for two weeks. I ended up getting a tracheostomy (hole cut through the neck to open a direct airway). It's to take your brother off of the ventilator and will get oxygen through his trach. They are trying to move him along. If he is nonresponsive, I would make sure you have a neurologist run an EEG test to make sure he's 100% brain dead before you make any decision. This decison will impact your family no doubt. If he fails his EEG test, the doctor will suggest pulling him off life support, nursing home, or 24/7 care provided by family only if he has a trach and not on vent.

I was on life support for two weeks. My wife made the decision to take 2/3 of my right lung out and trach. If you haven't already done so, I would have your church clergy visit your brother in the hospital for prayer. If needed, hospitals have clergy on staff to assist as needed. My prayers are with you. I've been there and made it back. Don't give up hope.

Thank you all for the support and prayers! I do believe in miracles and have seen a few happen in my life, so nobody is giving up hope yet.

Cutehumor - so glad you came through on your situation. They have been running brain scan tests and say there is very little activity at this point. He barely reacts to any physical stimulation or noise. I don't know how long the doctors will wait to give their prognosis on the life support situation, but my parents are ready to make the decision if it comes down to that.

As of this last weekend, there has been no change in his condition. He is a Veteran, and my parents are getting concerned about the general hospital keeping him there long term (for insurance reasons) to give him more time to hopefully come out of the coma. My dad wants to see if he can be transferred to a VA hospital if that's the case, and get the VA doctors involved if necessary.

The current doctor doesn't paint a very good picture based on the brain testing they've conducted, and said if he does come out of it that he'll probably need assisted living for the rest of his life. My parents know if the doctor suggests to remove him from life support that they will have to make that ultimate decision. I've told them both if the doctors are sure he has no brain activity then it would probably be best to let him go. Nobody should be put into that difficult and stressful situation.

Shocking and sad how someone's life can be turned upside down in an instant. Bless you all who have sent prayers and good wishes.

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." (Isaiah 26:3). May God bless your brother with healing and may He bless you and your family with strength, peace and comfort.

I will keep praying for you and your family and will share your brother's name with our Church and we will lift him before God's throne of grace in our prayers.

The doctor thinks he had some kind of seizure and fell and hit his head causing major blunt force trauma. They had to relieve pressure off his brain because of it.

I just got an email today from my Mom on his latest status ... see below. This is a terrible situation and has been stressful for everyone, especially for my parents if they have to make the decision to disconnect him from life support.

I believe in the power of prayer ... and have been praying about this lately. I hope he can pull out of this!

The surgeon called me late today and said there is no change only a slight improvement. He opens his eyes but does not move them or show any recognition to anything and then closes then again. He is still in critical condition and had a breathing tube directly inserted into his lungs and has a feeding tube through his I believe nose (not sure). He wants my permission for him to do a trekconomy (spelling) in the front of his neck under his chin for breathing and put the feeding tube in his stomach as there is less of a chance for infection. There has been a very small improvement and the doctor said he would never be independent and with brain injury you never know. His only brain activity is when he opens his eyes and closes them again. When they stimulate an area of his body he will move or jerk but that is all.

He said I need to think about what I want done with him for the near future. Please pass this information on to your dad and ask him how he feel about this and he needs to decide what should be done also. I can't do this decision without considering him. I feel this is all on my shoulders and it has been very hard on me and hard to wrap my mind on all this. I know it would be too much to ask him if he would split the burial costs if it comes to that.

My thoughts and prayers for you and your family. And will continue to do so.

I noticed that too. I never saw this thread when it was current, but I do sincerely hope there was a positive outcome for your Brother, Scott.

You may remember me from Dennis' board. I'll never forget your kind condolences, when I posted about my best friend passing away, over 9 years ago now.

I looked through the OPs posts after his last post in this thread and there did not seem to be any break in his postings, change in tone, or reference to the event.

I hope thats an indication that everything went well.
