Need Recommendations for 12' F150 with ecoboost

There is a guy over on one of the ford forums that highly recommends castrol edge.

The guy tears down motors and has dealt with DI motors for many years.

Anyone have opinions on castrol?

I will run whatever oil I can easily find and whatever works best for my motor. I was considering PP/or PU because a lot of guys speak highly of it.

Just to clarify, I wasn't being cynical... I do apologize if you took it that way. And of course, yes PP and PU are great oils. It just depends on your OCI and what you intend on doing with the truck. I'd say, if you intend on a moderate OCI, and that if you are towing, go for PP or PU. But if you won't be towing, then MC would be more than sufficient.

Pp and PU are great oils however as triton has eluded to so is motorcraft and you've really gotta keep in mind the duty cycle.

Pennzoil ultra is a great oil and capable of 10000+ mile drains however short tripping where the oil doesn't attain and maintain its operating temp puts more strain on the lubricant in comparison to highway miles.
I'm running PU right now with a fram ultra oil filter. I'm at 7500 miles on the oil and 280 hours on the oil. I did the drip test and the oil completely absorbed and no chunks of residue were left behind so I'm confident the oil has more life in it still.
I added a can of motor oil saver as well to raise the tbn because the oil level hasn't dropped enough for me to add any top up oil.
So match the oil to the interval and duty cycle. Triton gave decent advice.

No worries, I wasn't offended.

I drive this truck less than 10k a year, probably less than 7500miles. No towing, no real hauling. Most of my trips are short and around town. I always let the truck warm up and baby it around.

I will run whatever oil makes the most sense financially and best protects my engine. If I can find an oil that will last for a whole year, awesome, if I need to change it twice a year, im fine with that too.

I keep reading pennzoil is a good oil for this motor but have also heard motocraft is good as well. I have access to both at my local Walmart.

Again, I joined this site to learn what is the best oil to run in the ecoboost. I am open to any suggestions.

Given the extreme cold the vehicle will be subject to for much of the winter as well as the short-trip driving you do, I don't think it's so much a matter of the oil as it is the drain interval.
No oil can allieviate the effects of fuel dilution.
Only by driving a decent distance on each cold start can fuel dilution be minimized and that isn't how you've said you'll use this truck. The DI doesn't help in this regard, either.
The same is true of condensation. Only by driving a long enough distance to heat the oil up and keep it there can the mositure be evaporated.
Therefore, I'd suggest that you use any name brand synthetic 5w30 and change it every 5K.
You might want to try a UOA after a few runs just to validate this drain interval. Longer might be feasible and shorter might be necessary.
For the filter, Motorcraft oil filters are a quality choice at a very reasonable cost.
DI+turbo+short trip driving=fairly frequent oil changes IMHO.

Copy. Thanks for the help. I think this first go around I will do Pennzoil platinium and then do an oil analysis at 5k.

Xcellent advice!

You can also pick any 5w30 oil that meets the spec and run it to 20% on the IOLM before changing it. We are trying to get a few people to do UOAs with those parameters, especially if we can stick to one oil.

The IOLM will limit you to 1 year and a max of 10k miles. If you short trip a lot in the cold, it will tick down faster. 20% would probably be reached right around where people are recommending for you 5k-7k miles.

Ford is advertising LOF + tire rotation for $30 with MC Semi-Syn and MC filter. They also do every 6th oil change free with their reward program. (MC Parts alone are $25 at Walmart so cost is the same). I'd just take it to the dealer every 5K and avoid the fuel dilution problem.

If you don't tow/haul, and if you run ~7.5k or less, then I would buy whatever of the 3 is cheaper for you. Most likely that would be Motorcraft.

I looked and my local ford dealership does offer the 30 "works" package.

I may do this. It would be nice if they kept up with that deal and it wasnt just a once time offering.

They were offering the same deal last summer too. Their rewards program is called 'Owner Advantage' and you can join online if you aren't already enrolled. Most dealers even wash your car as part of the oil change, and rarely leave grease in your interior.
