I have a 2000 isuzu rodeo with a 4L30E tranny, and it started slipping in 3rd gear. Had it rebuilt about 30K ago by Cottman (will never use them again). Anyway, the slipping only occurs after the vehicle is warmed up, it takes about 15 minutes to start slipping. I'm currently using Valvoline max life, and I have added a bottle of Lucas Stop to try to give it a little more 'grab' but it didn't seem to help. I just need this to keep driving for a little longer until I can fix my other ride.

Is there an ATF (like perhaps Swepco or Amsoil torque drive perhaps) that will hold it's viscoscity better as it warms up, and/or is known to be helpful in situations like this? I'm also in TX, and it's hot as [censored] here right now. I appreciate any feedback you might have.

Thanks.

I guess you could rig an oil cooler AFTER the one in the radiator, maybe even with a little electric fan.

I've always heard type F was stickier, but I'd verify that.

If you have no desire to fix it right, add a cooler, and swap about 50% of the ATF for Type F (no friction modifiers). That would probably get it to grab well enough for now.

I have, and know of others who have had good luck with Lucas transmission stop slip product.

To me, it's worth a try, the trans is going out, if this can get you a few more miles out of it, why not.

A thicker fluid will create more line pressure. All of castrol's fluids are pretty thick. Castrol domestic, import, and high mileage are all around 8.0. Pennzoil high mileage is probably the thickest fluid I've seen with a viscosity of 8.5 at 100 celsius. I believe Pennzoil's mercon v is around 8.4. The lucas mentioned in the above post is extremely thick goop. Not sure whether I'd wanna try it or not.
