Just purchased a 2008 Hyundai Sonata 2.4l, 34,000 miles. Currently it has MC 5w20 in it and I am planning on an oil change tomorrow.
According to the manuel I am to use "5w-20, API,SJ,SL or above, ILSAC GF-3 or above". I am a huge fan of M1 and am planning on using MI Fully Synthetic that is ILSAC GF-4 ACEA A1/B1 API SM,SL/CF along with a WIX filter.

Question- Does this Mobil One fully synthetic meet or exceed specs outlined in the manuel?, or am I needing a "blend"....It does say that I can use a conventional 5w30 over a certain outside temp....Just want to do the right thing, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks...and your right I meant "deciphering", sorry about that

And I thought he was just a fan of the Beverly Hillbillies! See, Jethro got that "advanced 3rd grade education", and would impress Uncle Jed and the Clampett family with his intellect by displaying his "ciphering" abilities!

Uncle Jed: (to Jethro) "Boy, show Mr. Drysdale how smart you are, do some ciphering for us."

Jethro: (enthuisatically) "Sure Uncle Jed! Do you want me to do some times, or gosintas?"

Jed: "Oh, I dunno, lets do some gosintas"

Jethro: (enthuisatically) " 2 gosinta 6, 3 times." 3 gosinta 9, 3 times." "4 gosinta 8, 2 times!"

Jed: Weeeeee Doggieeee!!!

Apparently this was the wrong forum to make an effort to join for advice on vehicle longevity issues as it pertains to lubrication...I apologize for wasting both the forum's and my time.

Be well,

Dave

Don't worry Dave. There's plenty of people that will give you honest advice and plenty that will poke fun at you too, I wouldn't sweat it.

I'm pretty sure the Mobil oil you want to use is SM, which is above SL. Are you sure it says SL, I thought that rating was a bit old, prior to 08' models?

M1 meets the corvette spec, one of only a handful of oils that do...holding a bottle of M1 0-20 in my grubby hands right now, i am going to put in my ford next OC for first time with that viscosity...do motor a favor, use the M1

Geeze, lighten up! I meant ABSOLUTLEY no harm. I was by NO MEANS implying anything derogatory whatsoever towards you. Interjecting a bit of levity in this forum and (hopefully) causing a lighthearted smile or two was all I was trying to do. Geeze, so sorry you were offended...

Okie-doke, I am a Paramedic not a mechanic, and so I seek out folks that know more than me for advice...I bought this car for my wife and she seems to adore it, with that being said I want to maintain it the best way possible.

I have a 1997 GMC Sierra, 146K 350ci and have had zero issues with Valvoline conventional, but with these new oils and the vast variety I get somewhat confused as to what I need to use...

I need to adhere to the warranty and so with the first answer I received I feel better using the M1 synthetic, I used it in my 2005 Pontiac Sun fire and over 157K never had and issue, but truth be told this is the first "Import" I have dealt with.....No issues here, I was referred here by my mechanic.....

It's all good....Thanks!

Just new to the board...Kinda hard to figure out whats what, I am not a mechanic and did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night..lol

Completed the first change a short time ago, drove it, placebo effect as it maybe, the motor sounds a tick quieter using the Mobil One Fully Synthetic versus the MC 5w-20, this after an hour cruise...We'll have to watch the MPG and see if there is any difference.....

This motor is a tick over 2 years old, I am curious how long the seals will need to adjust if they have to at all?....

Okie doke...LOL....I am sort of an old school guy, oil and filter every 3K, but I have never dealt with fully synthetics...am curious whether or not in the opinion of the folks in the know here if it is realistic to follow the Manuel and go 7.5k between scheduled lubrication maintenance?....This car is only used to commute, 62 miles each way for a grand total of 620 miles per week all highway...

I did realise today I am not hearing things, the motor has less chatter on start up with the MI....22 degrees f this morning...

Thanks all,

Dave

You can DEFINETLY go 7.5k between changes on the M1....heck, you could do it on conventional oil, like I do......

Any M1 full synthetic will meet or exceed the specs for any engine except certain high performance engines which might require 0w40. I would recommend running whatever viscosity the manufacturer recommends. M1 will easily protect up to the manufacturers recommended OCI.
