I've bought my last 4 sets off of Craigslist.
No (or precious little) mile take-off's.
My wife's 2012 Highlander got a set of 245/55r19 Continental's a couple of months ago. $200 for the set. The guy had 4 sets in that size and wanted them gone. I nearly didn't respond to the add because the price was so low. He'd had them in his barn and no tire was dated later than Oct 2014. All the tires had mfg ink marking still on the tread surface.
Using Craigslist I do start looking way before I need tires and I don't mind storing them in the basement if the price is right. I bought the 245/55's nearly a year before I installed them.
I paid $500 for a full set of Michelin 265/60/18's for my 2012 F150. They had 76 miles on them. The service manager at a Toyota dealership owned them from a new Tacoma 4X4 he bought and immediately lifted.
Deals can be had.
