Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

While the turkey is in the oven, I need from your guys an advice on neighbor and dog issues.

I live in a "good an safe" neighborhood, but have a neighbor with anger control and aggressive dog. My little dog an a leash was attacked by his dog running loose outside his house a few times already, and he knows that but doesn't care. Last night was bad, because he had guests with more dogs and the whole pack of them were trying to bite my little one on the leash. I was fighting for the life of my little dog for quite a few minutes and it was very loud because of dogs barking and I was screaming on the top of my voice. No one came out from any of the houses on the street.

Eventually, I banged on the door of the neighbor screaming to take those dogs and he and his son proceeded to push me and my petite wife by force from his property to the street. He was very aggressive and abusive verbally and we ended up calling police, which took their time to show up (30 minutes). Then we heard earful from the police how we shouldn't have knocked on the door and provoke the situation, and we should have called the police about the dogs in the first place, which was really ridiculous because it took them half an hour to show up. The neighbor didn't deny the dogs story or pushing us, but he told the police it was a self defense, because my wife "swung at him." Unfortunately, in the heat of the emotions ("fog of war" LOL), we didn't record any of that, and that was very stupid of us.

I'm sure this will repeat itself in the future and I'm trying to figure out what are my options besides making sure to record the event. Do you think I should arm myself with a gun and shoot the dogs on the spot? How about tear gas? Shining bright light from a cell phone was useless (and prevented us from recording). I kicked the dogs a few times, but it didn't help. What would you guys do?

Thanks!

If you know it happens regularly have the cops come over and witness it when you walk your dog. Or animal control.

I would advise against a gun because you go to popping off at the dogs you will likely end up in jail for firearm discharge and reckless endangerment.

pepper spray might be a option but be carefull outside. It isn't a controlled blast and just a whiff of blowback can choke you up.

Anything you do to the dogs will I'm sure will bring out the bleeding heart animal lovers regardless of your or pets personal danger.

Tough situation...

If you can't correct the problem amicably, you can sign a complaint and let the court take care of the problem. You can get your teeth knocked out doing what you did.

Don't just call the police, call Animal Control, too. They can and will document the attacks. Keep calling the police, when they respond tell whoever shows up that your calls earlier were not taken seriously, and you need them to "do their job" this time. If that does not work, file a formal complaints at the police station. Sad it works this way but keep complaining until they fix the issues. Staying quite will get you ignored.

We've had a couple children attacked and maimed for life by loose aggressive dogs here in Cincinnati (not my neighborhood), the SPCA/Animal Control will come out if you ask them often enough. I sometimes wear my steel toe boots when I walk my 13 pound female Dachsund/Chihuahua mix for this reason. Pick her up, and it's Riverdance time!

Paper trail, call when it happens. Video is good. I carry a good size lockblade when i walk my dog. Firearm is not a good choice for dogs in a neighborhood, and dogs up close.

Stay off his property, he will also be looking to video you.

First, relax with the family and try to have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Going to the neighbor won't accomplish anything.
Stay in your yard or public areas.
If his dog then attacks you or your dog, act accordingly / a gun would be your very last resort.

Keeping in mind it's best to call the Police and let it become their problem.

Documents any interactions with the neighbor / his dogs and the Police.

Good luck.

If you have no kids, Get yourself a Pitbull. Not only is your bad neighbor going to hate you but all other neighbors are going to hate you too.
Throw the ball down the street and your neighbors will watch your Pitbull get bigger, faster and uglier.

If you can't beat them, join them.

Call the police and animal control. I cant stand this kind of trash. Sorry you have such poor neighbors. Their animals should be taken away from them since they clearly don't know how to care for them properly.

I'm so sorry brother! Man you have awesome self control,I would've ripped him in half. NO male under any circumstances puts his hands on a women,EVER.

Police, animal control, and HOA if you have one, in that order. Getting aggressive with a neighbor for whatever reason always leads to no good.

You can get inexpensive cameras with good quality video that record to an SD card. I would put one facing the area you are with your dog and when their dog becomes aggressive you will have the proof you need and then call the cops. Outside of these areas keep your phone on full charge and have it recording. Maybe wear a shirt with a pocket and have it sitting in there camera facing out like a body-cam or even in your hand as you are walking with your dog.

Once you have video it's going to be a lot harder for him to defend himself against your claims and not have charges against him as some point or have the dog removed.

Never confront him directly without the police there. This will always end badly.

A gun is also not the right answer for many reasons.

Not that it's exactly the same thing as your situation but we had the city warn the house behind us that used to leave their dog outside all night and it would bark all night long and loud. We tried nicely explaining the problem and that we could hear the dog with the windows closed and that didn't work, so I setup a camera pointed out the back window with it closed and you could clearly hear the dog going all night long. I called the city (to get to bylaw enforcement), showed them the video and they went and talked to the folks with the dog. They left me a nasty note in my mailbox and that was it. No more noisy dogs. They still have the dog but not outside any longer for more than a pee.

Happy American Thanksgiving!

Walk your dog so you avoid his house. Should you have to ? Nope. Is it inconvenient to you ? Maybe. You went about it the wrong way though and kinda got put in your place and even the police didn't back you up. Remember, you were on his property too so they were well within their rights to "move" you off of it. It could have been much worse for you and your wife too and they could easily throw up a "we felt threatened" defense and you would most likely lose it the police got involved.

Walk the other way with your dog until this gets sorted out. While you're in your rights to walk anywhere you want on public sidewalks etc., you know what's coming if you go his direction. It was your mistake to not call animal control when you were attacked before, there would be previous incidents on file already.

You're probably lucky the pack didn't cause you or your wife or dog serious injuries. It seems these situations don't get resolved until a pet or person is seriously injured or killed by the out of control dog. Bear spray is serious stuff and I wouldn't be afraid to use it on an aggressive dog, as previously mentioned be aware of wind direction.

Be safe and be smart. Don't confront the owner again.
