Neat guitar work

all this people who do weirdo fast things and make funny noises with guitars like Joe Satriani and other idiots bore the heck out of me; no feeling, melody or depth...listen to a few notes played by somebody like David Gilmour and one sees how much a true guitarist can convey emotions and feelings without being a technical, fast-finger wizard. (eg. 2nd solo from "comfortably numb" from the live album "delicate sound of thunder" seen here:

I had the exact same opinion - this guy sure can play but the music has no hook or soul. Gilmour and Jeff Beck are the master of the bend. BB King and Robin Trower are vibrato masters. SRV had emotion dripping off every note. There are many great guitar players out there, across many genres. Here are a few random selections that get my endorphins flowing:

I used to get a kick out of watching MTV Unplugged, way back when. It was interesting to see who could actually play without effects, who could get by, and who were afraid to try, bringing along what amounted to small orchestras.

I dunno, famous guitarists refer to Satriani as 'Saint Joe'... he is easily the most respected guitarist out there for the multitude of famous guitarists he has taught, as well as his approach to melody and theory.... guy is unbelievable and the nicest person you would ever meet... I can understand those sentiments about Malmsteen or maybe Vai, but Satriani is in his own class, not that they matter much but 14 Grammy noms means you must be doing something decent. Satriani actually did MTV unplugged with SRV

a highly underrated guy that is absolutely crazy good is Stanley Jordan.

Satriani said he tries every year to get EVH and Jeff Beck on but they both say it's "not their thing", most guitarists view it as a competetive forum, when it is nothing of the sort and that's probably why he gets the response.

I agree that Satriani is technically very, very good, and may be a great teacher and nice guy. But his music doesn't do anything for me.

I'm with ya. Gotta listen to music that moves you. If what you're listening to doesn't touch your soul, it's just noise.

Earlier this evening I was cruising Youtube and found a couple old (like 1981 old) video clips of Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads on guitar, playing songs from their 1st album. "Blizzard Of Ozz" had a huge impact on me when I was a teenager. I listened to that tape over and over and over, simply amazed at Randy's playing. I was very shocked to hear about his death and seeing the old vids were both wonderful and painful. The 25th anniversary of his death is next Monday, March 19.

Listen to NPR radio any Saturday night to the old blues artists. You'll see where all these guys got their riffs and licks from. Many of the songs are old blues standards, just rehashed.

I love those blues guys.
And right now, I'm liking Ben Harper, though I'll tire of him in a week and listen to AC/DC or Bad Company for a while, then I'll go back to James Taylor, then maybe Dire Straits, then it'll be time for some...?
