As my 5.3ltr silverado now has 66,xxx on the clock i put around 3/4 a quart of MMO in the sump as a top off around a month ago and 4,000 miles on the current OCI mobil 1 5-30 I added around 600 miles this past month for 4,600 miles and i pulled the plug today.. WOW, Super nasty black as nite oil ! This truck has had a steady diet of Valv syn, PP,PU and now two oci's of Mobil one since my purchase four years ago at 36,000 miles..

Im using quality synthetic oils and good filters for over 30,000 miles.. why in the world is my oil this black after using 3/4 a quart of MMO ? My oil has been pretty dark before at the end of a 5,xxx OCI but its never looked like this.. I couldnt believe how BLACK it was.

thought or opinions ?

Perhaps whoever owned it before you had more devious plans for that engine - maybe they used jiffy lube dino and ran it out to 10k+. Maybe it's sludged and dying a slow death.

Meh, I wouldn't worry about it. That engine will probably outlive the truck. Maybe.

Dun dun dunnnn.

Interesting, as I have the same truck with the same mileage. I also use similar good oils and filters. Never imagined my engine could need cleaning....now Im concerned!

Before we give MMO any credit, have you changed your PCV, if you have not then change it or clean it out. Have you checked all of the hoses in the PCV System too make sure they are clean and clear.

What are your driving habits like?

the original owner had the truck for 12 months and traded it in, It was then a dealership / lot truck for 10 months. Then i purchased it with it being almost two years old 06 model purchased in early 08, its had 8-10 OCI's using Big brand name quality Syn's, and never had more than 5,000 on a run. whenever dumped in the past, oil has been dark but it was still transparent. This 4,000 mile run then MMO then another 600 miles the dipstick looked dark so i decided to dump it 400 miles earlier than normal.. Im not kidding this was dark oil..

LOL on the dun,dun,dun.. good stuff.

the PCV is a non-serviceable item on this truck, its built into the valve cover. Im not praising MMO, As a matter of fact i only topped off with it after reading so many things on this site about it.

My driving habbits are grandad like 99% of the time with the once a year (to the floor for a few seconds to blow it out) driving. BUT now that you mention this, ive done several (3-4) rolling WOT in the past few months while experimanting with fuels and testing for "knock". Ive also changed my fuel from 87 to 89 oct 80% of the time now.. but overall my truck rarely sees over 2,000RPM as im a cheapskate and dont want to burn alot of fuel with a heavy foot.

Oil colour doesn't mean much. Different oils and their bases oxidize differently and will change different colours. It may be that the combo of this oil and MMO resulted in a darker than normal hue.

Fire the sample off for a UOA with particle count data, that would at least tell us SOMETHING, though with no previous data to compare to, not much.

Exactly. Heck, my oil always looks black when it's draining out,

Oil color doesn't mean much. Why in the world would anyone use a light air compressor oil like MMO in a motor these days? Really its not 1965 anymore.

It probably reacted with your good oil and messed it up.

Exactly.

You ever notice how it seems like in almost every other oil thread in BITOG someone somehow feels the need to bring up MMO?

Nothing like a little stealth marketing I suppose.

I know colour doesnt mean much, but what suprised me was how much darker it was.. this is out of the normal. Im not judgeing the oil or saying it was shot or no longer useable, It was just simply so dark that being 400 miles out from my normal OCI i decided to go ahead and dump it. it was personal choice.

and for every person on this site that knocks MMO, there's three more that step up and preach its wonders. Ive not used it in the crank but have used it for years for various other applications with great success.. As mentioned before im not a "bandwagon MMO user" i read what others used and have positive things to say about and form my own conclusions.

Im in NO WAY looking to turn this into a MMO thread, and would prefer not to turn this into a finger pointing thread at the guy that used a product recomended by so many on BITOG.. the fact still remains that i know what my used oil looks like, and what came out of my truck was tar black..

asking for opinions to this event..
Im not claiming MMO cleaned up anything..
Im not claiming my oil was shot or out of good service..
Im not Marketing anything.. I wear a badge for a living..

What i am doing is discussing my particular experience durring this OCI, the darker colour may be due to other factors outside of my realm of knowledge.

A few of you guys know me, we have talked in other threads.. have i ever been a bilboard for anything ?????

Rant over, back to my black oil.. i still have the oil.. a sample to blackstone may be in order.

Keep in mind that since you have started using Mobil 1, being a synthetic it has a tendency to dissolve sludge. This is why sometimes using dino for most of an engines life then switching to full synthetic can dislodge a sludge-clotted leak.

Just something to consider in addition to using MMO...which will further pull the black tar out. The Mobil 1 may have loosened any sludge and the MMO was given a running start.

If you read closely you will see that ive been using syn for 4 years. valv syn PP, PU and most recently Mobil 1. thanks for your input though.

Yes you did mention that....my bad.

well, i cut open the filter but i didnt take any pictures (my two year old just wasnt gonna let dad stay in the garage) Anyway, ive cut open a half dozen filters ever and this filter looked no different then the last.. Im gonna guess that the earlier poster mentioning that mixing the MMO with the syn may have just created a darker hue (colour) is a viable awnser, and maybee, just maybee a little additional cleaning did happen.. I dunno, im not going to over think this..
