In the mid 2000's I was servicing our Rav4 and a Yaris. I was sourcing JAPAN Toyota OE filters**. I may have one cut open kicking around, though my wife told me to throw them out after 17 years in the basement LOL. **the thick "foam" media ones.

Yup those are the funky "fuzzy foam" ones, for awhile you could get them in the US but Toyota stopped that.. Now all we can get is the normal pleated media from Thailand (Denso). But.. the UOA's on that filter in my tC were excellent!

The Toyota foam type OFs were used as the Toyota factory filters, at least on some Toyotas. While I remember seeing them posted before, I didn't recall seeing the bypass type. Searching to find a better image of the factory Toyota factory filter bypass , found there was another brand using flat spring. As link shows, the Mahle made Mazda OEM also used it.

That from linked thread. So clearly others besides Purolator have used the flat spring bypass., most seen on smaller applications.

Mazda V6 OEM Mahle oil filter

I got a OEM Mazda V6 oil filter (p/n: JEY0-14-302 -9A) cut open today and was very impressed at how well built it is. I already knew Mazda sells very good oil filters for their older cars and this is confirmation that this is still happening. There's pics around the web for the Tokyo Roki made...
