Okay I took a chance this evening and picked up a case and a half of this oil. I am thinking it would be a good choice for the next OCI on my 4.0L Jeep and maybe even my 5.9 magnum when the Pennzoil HM comes due for a change?

Lately I have been all over the place on oils; I even abandoned Mobil-1 & Castrol which were my preferred full-syn & dino respectively for years.

But since Rotella 10w30 is hard to find, I thought the syn-blend SL-rated Mystik would be a nice choice; especially for flat-tappet and towing. I already switched to their gear oil so I am just curious what people have to say about this JT-8? I am sure it has plenty of ZDDP similar to Rotella-T?

UHHUOHHH - EDIT:

I just saw from their website they make a JT-8 regular & a super-heavy-duty version...I got the HD version so I guess that is okay? Anyway, comments are welcome on both oils...

Okay so it looks like major difference is that the one rated for gasoline engines is API-SM rated and the HDEO is not:

http://docs.mystiklubes.com/msds_pi/M20003.pdf

So does that mean that the SM-rated had
So am I correct in asuming that the HDEO version is infact similar to rotella and is this safe to run in my gasoline engine or do I need the SM-rated version as opposed to the super-heavy-duty version of the JT-8 10w30...

Man nothing is ever simple is it LOL...I did not even know when I bought it that Mystik had two different 10w30 oils.

The HDEO is an all fleet oil. FYI The Restrictions on P and Z in SM/SL API ratings is not as restrictive as the ILSAC restrictions. THe HDEO is what you want. It will serve your Jeep well.

Okay 2 other questions for you:

Would the HDEO version 10w30 JT-8 also be good for my 180k mile pushrod roller Mopar V8 (as described in my sig)? It uses a tad of oil but only has one cat. I am looking for an "all fleet oil" for both my rides.

Second question...do you think their syn-blend JT-8 SM-rated 5w30 would be a good choice for a newer passenger car? I was thinking of trying it in the g/f's '08 Pontiac. I assume since it is SM rated it has less ZDDP and would be okay for her cats & warranty?

Thanks!

I concurr. The Passenger car 5w30 is probably similar to the Citgo formulation and meeting the ILSAC GF4 specs will be well suited for your GF's newer car.
The JT-8 HD will make a great all fleet for your Old Mopar V8 and the Tractor motor I6.
My recomendation for the JT8 is purely based on it being an easily available HD all fleet 10w30.

Well I came across this online...what do you guys make of it? Am I taking a risk by switching my 180k vehicle to the Mystik HDEO; or since it had Mobil-1 every 3k for the last 8yrs it is already deposit free?:

Do I need a flushing oil?

Unless there's something seriously wrong with your engine, like you've filled it with milk or shampoo, you really ought never to need a flushing oil. If you're transitioning from a mineral oil to a synthetic oil, likewise you probably don't need to flush the engine first.
If you do decide to do an oil flush, first drain your engine of all it's oil, but leave the old oil filter in place. Next fill it up with flushing oil and run it at a fast idle for about 20 minutes. Finally, drain all this off (and marvel at the [censored] that comes out with it), replace the oil filter, refill with a good synthetic oil and voila! Clean engine.
Of course, like most things nowadays, there's a condition attached when using flushing oils. In an old engine you really don't want to remove all the deposits. Some of these deposits help seal rings, lifters and even some of the flanges between the heads, covers, pan and the block, where the gaskets are thin. I have heard of engines with over 280,000km that worked fine, but when flushed it failed in a month because the blow-by past the scraper ring (now really clean) contaminated the oil and screwed the rod bearings.
Using Diesel oil for flushing

A question came up some time ago about using diesel-rated oils to flush out petrol engines. The idea was that because of the higher detergent levels in diesel engine oil, it might be a good cleaner / flusher for a non-diesel engine. Well most of the diesel oil specification oils can be used in old petrol engines for cleaning, but you want to use a low specification oil to ensure that you do not over clean your engine and lose compression for example. Generally speaking, an SAE 15W/40 diesel engine oil for about 500 miles might do the trick.

Your engines will be just fine. Stop worrying!

Well I went ahead & picked up some of the SM-rated 5w30 for the g/f's car...gonna try it out...

from the MSDS on the thicker stuff Mystik appears to be 30% GP-III :)

Well I know some of this is older info, but still I figured I'd post this info since I am going to be trying this 10w30 in my rigs when next OCI cometh. There is much more out there about the 15w40 but the 10w30 HDEO is the one I am curious about. You have to read on down for info. And it even has the gasoline 5w30 VOA too but no doubt it is not the SM formula of today???

And here is a handy doc I found with some general good BITOG reading on oils:

HAPPY READING!!!

When I lived in OK Mystik was available at about all stores. I have used both HD and the SM rated semi syns. Our F150 was very happy on it and have though about mail ordering it direct. When we moved back to AZ I brought 4 cases of 3-2 gallons 15-40 for the diesels and 3 cases of 5-30.

Great product with a lot of TBN and decent base stocks
