Congrats to him...and I hope he stays safe.

Now, someone like my brother will turn him into a real Marine!

(My brother is a Marine NCO, one tour in Iraq, three in Afghanistan, Bronze Star. Currently stationed in the relative safety of Okinawa.)

Also, FYI: if he is posted to Camp Lejeune, be aware that the locals all drive like lunatics!

First of all a BIG THANK YOU to ALL above (and anyone else who posts to this thread, or wishes him and ALL of our phenomenal servicemen and servicewomen well).

Next, yes, he IS going to Lejeune, so I will warn him of the local King Richard Petty wannabes.

I'll tell you, those locals in Beaufort were RIGHT on my bumper most of the time, and I don't know if that is just how they drive, or if they were doing it because I am a dang yankee. (Low speed drafting, maybe??

)

They assigned him to supply, but being the restless soul (crazy??) he is, he wants to get a re-assignment into artillery (with school first, of course), and see ACTION.
Yes, this does give me a strong feeling of apprehension, but he wants to fire the BIG guns in the sand box!

He is a Marine and he makes me proud! I know it is hard to understand, but you will. I wish ya'll the best.

Congrats!

By the way, for some reason I always pictured you being in your early to mid 30s, but if you have a son old enough to be a marine I guess I was wrong!

My brother spent 7 months in Iraq, a total of more than 20 months in Afghanistan. His worst injury since enlisting occurred less than 2 miles from the gates of Lejeune...he was the passenger in aq buddy's car, and a guy in a Camry ran a stop sign & t-boned them. The tally: A bunch of bruises, ten stitches from the window exploding in his face, and a sprained wrist. Oh, yeah: the guy had no licence and no insurance.

The head drill instructor gave a talk to all of the assembled parents/loved ones/friends at the beginning of the ceremony and warned us that the biggest killer of young new Marines was very fast superbikes driven wrecklessly, or being hit by unaware, not paying attention motorists while riding one.

He told us to give a stern talking to our new Marines about care and safety, both on these 'land rockets' AND while driving 'cages'.

Thanks Patman!

But nope, I will be 57 come September.

As you can guess, my brother Marc (aka LS1LT1 online), the youngest of the four of us, is also overflowing with pride as well!

I don't know if you knew this but Marc is one of my Facebook friends!

Congratulations to your son!

Just my opinion, from all the bases I've been on and frequent, Parris Island is not that impressive at all.

Respect goes out to those that served and are currently serving.

THANKS!

Yes true about P.I., but I meant as a basic training facility only, and the seaside location.

Quantico impressed me due to it's shear expanse (I actually rode a bike road race around some of it's perimeter roads in my distant youth, and one lap was ~12 miles!).

And yes, I am SURE I would be (MUCH MORE) impressed by the bases with some hardcore 'hardware' within their confines!!

Yes, respect, gratitude, reverence, and a whole lot more is what we should ALL be showing to ALL active, AND inactive armed services personnel!

Glad you feel the way you do. Hard to touch those ceremonies, large or small, when one knows how hard all worked to achieve their status.

My son is in Afghanistan for a few more months driving one of these for the USMC.

The Marines are a small bunch. A little crazy. But reassuringly crazy.

He sent me this one a few years back. Enjoy:

And I'll add that if you haven't read, Sledge, The Old Breed, you'll much enjoy it.

^^^^Yes, THANKS!!

When he had the on-base leave the day before the graduation ceremony, I had a chance to talk for a while with him, and it's funny but I said the same exact thing, that you have to be at least a little crazy to be a Leatherneck.
But I DID add that I mean that in the MOST positve, cool, and yes, reassuring way possible.
