Since you went there...you have to be kidding to state that the people who disagree with your "facts" are ignorant. I suppose all of the OEMs that are far more credible that you will ever be are also ignorant and that is why they state the OCIs in the owner's manuals? Of course, they have not spent millions on R&D to actually know what they are talking about and the engineers who have decades of experience are also ignorant, but your seat of the pants visual inspection trumps all of that?

Who is ignorant here?

Yes exactly. And this is what many people do, ergo the often recommended oil change at 500 or 1000 miles.

if you haven't noticed there is a lot of nonsense on here. i love bitog but some people on here are flat ridiculous . most the people on here follow the latest trend. like going 10,000 miles on an oil which can be done but i think there is to many variables from car to car to do that. and i think instead of trying to get every last drop out of the oil i prefer to get every last mile out of my engine. and don't feel bad Ive been called a troll before. i was banned because after i was called that i voiced my displeasure. if you refuse to follow the in crowd your a troll. lol people cannot just say " hey whatever i don't agree but if it works for you that's fine"

The quality of this board has definitely gone downhill since when I joined.

The funniest thing is what I'm saying is quite mainstream.

Again you are.

Even BMW does recommend an "early" oil change, but thats not in the manual but instead in service bulletins.

Clearly; for engaging in such a pointless conversation. I respect your opinion, but I will not continue in this conversation and allow it digress into a personal attack.

Best of luck with your endeavors!

When I first changed the oil on my last new car at 1,000 miles it WAS FULL OF METAL PARTICLES. A LOT of metal particles. So even 1,000 miles is way too late to do a first oil change.

So unless you have a Honda, which is a special exception, this is what I recommend:

change oil and filter at 500 miles
change oil and filter at 1000 miles
change oil and filter at 3000 miles
change oil and filter at 7000 miles

Then stick to normal OCI's from then on out. Simply factor this in, when you buy a new car.

So,this is what YOU recommend? Yeah,I'll get right on that. I'll go by owners manual or what a particular motor requires before I take blind advise from someone from a online forum.

Finally something we can agree on.

My 290+k miles 18+ years old LS400 had first oil change at 7000 miles with dino. The OCI for this car was/is 6-7k miles/6mo with dino and 12-14k miles/12mo with syn. Until now the engine is running quietly with no sign of impending exploding.

My 140+k miles 12+ years old E430 had first oil change at 13+k miles (passed the FSS(Flexible Service System) by several hundreds miles). The OCI for this car was/is 12-13k miles/12mo. The engine is quiet too.

If not changing FF early to rid of ton of wear metals will have engine suffers an early death, then either car above should be in junk yard by now.

what you just said is no more valid than saying you should change your oil early to prevent wear or damage. a lot of manufacturers recommend doing a early oil change . when my mom bought her focus in 09 the master tech told her to do it . when dads vette engine was brand new they said to break in it and change the oil after 500 miles. now lets rationalize a little why would an engine builder tell you to do it
to flush any metal in the oil and change the filter for the same reason because they want you to do the best by you engine

why doesn't honda or any other manufacturer tell you to do it because its inconvenient and because once you buy the car they don't care what you do . and because low maintenance is just one of many areas where auto makers compete and having lower maintenance than other brands gives you the edge. its common sense a part is machined and needs to be worn in with other various machined pieces. so maybe an engine can run fine without doing it but doing it certainly cannot be a bad thing.
