"MY" new '06 Civic EX - gently used.

Since the total loss of my Sentra, I decided to purchase a '06 Civic EX fully loaded with Navigation. It has only 13,000 miles on the odometer. I'll let the other guy pay the drive off the lot depreciation this time (first "used" car since I was a kid).
I'm very happy with it, drives nice, very quiet inside and out - looks like brand new.

My question is about the oil and the "Maintenance Minder" feature. From what I've read, the oil is only going to require a change every 7,500 to 10,000 miles if I follow this. With this OCI, I want to run a synthetic just to be safe. Plan on keeping the car until the tires fall off.

, but I'm hoping to hear from other owners of this engine and see what they use. I'm not sure if I should go with M1, PP, or Syntec. I have to use the 5w-20 flavor and would like to stick with an oil that is easily found everywhere (WalMart, etc).

The dealer changed the oil/filter and air filter when the car was traded in. They said they used Honda oil. If I remember correctly, this used to be Mobil Clean (without the 5000)???

Some other things I found interesting is that they only want the oil filter changed every other OCI. They state that the total oil amount in the engine is 4.8 qts, but with a oil/filter change, you will only get 3.9 qts, so I'm leaving a qt in there (another reason I want to go syn). I was also really surprised to see an auto transmission dipstick and drain plug. The manual says that I will only get 2.5 qts on a transmission drain and fill.

This is my first Honda, and so far I'm really impressed and happy to own one.

My wife also has a new 06' Civic EX and I wouldn't bother with synthetic unless I could find it super cheap. I use Pennzoil 5w20 dino in our Civic. I doubt your Civic will last any longer with syn compared to dino oil.

The only thing I don't like about the car is the silly parking brake.
 
There was a UOA of a civic a little while back, guy went 10,000 miles on havoline dino. Looked very very good.

Yes, it is strange looking. I'm guessing it's for the right-hand drive models? If so, I don't know why they didn't move it to the other side????

I guess that I could just run Pennzoil dino and use LC20 (already have it for use in the Santa Fe and old Sentra) to keep the oil in good shape. I think I will try this next time and then do a UOA to see how it holds up.

Go with M1 5w20 and never have to think about the oil again. Use a Pure One filter each change and it will run until you want to get rid of it. Enjoy the ride!
 
I have owned my '06 Civic LX sedan with 5-speed manual trans since new, bought it back in February. I left the factory fill in it for 5K miles, then changed the oil (Havoline 5W-20 dino/Napa Gold filter) and went on a 7,200 mile vacation trip around the USA.

By the time my trip was over the oil life had just hit 15%. The Maintenance Minder clicked off 10% oil life every 800 miles on my trip of almost all highway miles. As soon as I returned home I changed the oil and filter (Hav/Napa again). Now while commuting to work in non-congested city driving the oil life clicks off 10% every 600 miles. At my next oil change near the end of this year I will start using 0W-20 Mobil 1.

The car now has just over 13K miles on it. I get between 30 and 32 MPG while commuting, and averaged 41 MPG on my vacation trip. I'm very happy with my '06 Civic, I paid $16K even for it before tax and license.

I know you asked about the Civic 4-cyl, but I was pretty much in your same situation with my '07 Accord V6. I decided on Pennzoil Platinum because it's less that M1, has given excellent UOA's, is available in many places, and has specials like now at AA for BOGOF, so it's not much more than a name brand dino. At Wal-Mart, it runs about $18.97 for a 5-qt jug, so even that's only about $3.80 a qt...if you can find it in 5W-20.

Also gonna use Purolator PureOne filters, but I'm changing the filter every oil change. If it goes 8-9k, I want a new filter so it'll flow better.

I think I'm safe using the MM system going with this method. Been using Motorcraft Syn Blend, which is an excellent oil, but I cheat the MM and take it at about 30% just to be safe.
 
Was just out digging around the garage. I found 5 qts of old SL 0w-20 M1. That's going in on the next change

I love that an auto company lets us do these "extended" drains and are perfectly happy with keeping the warranty. I really like the idea of having a car that I don't have to change the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 just to keep the warranty.

Thanks for all the replys. I just got back from taking it for the first night drive. It takes a little time to get used to the instrument panel. Also, I can't keep from playing with the navigation system.

And why not? The oils are better, no more pushrods, engines are tighter, fuel injection controls the fuel better than carbs, there is simply no reason, with newer cars, to dump the oil the way folks do. Get on over to Advanced Auto and jump on a case of 5W20 QS or PP syn on the 2-4-1 deal, you'll get a prime-time synthetic for $2.84/quart, no rebates needed.

The Mobil1 is likely GroupIII these days anyway, no sense paying nearly $7.00/quart for it..

I don't buy into all that 'synthetic will give you longer engine life' Hype. Today's GF4 SM dino oils will keep that Honda alive for the next 20 years or 400K miles (which ever comes first).

Now if I had a 600 HP Porsche 911 Turbo or Supra Turbo.....then yeah I would use a synthetic oil.
 
The well meaning gentlemen on this board always seem to think that nothing will go wrong in your future years of Honda ownership. Hondas are great cars, but the shops are full of broken Hondas here in So Cal, just like thay are full of every other brand. Synthetic oil could easily help save you an engine repair down the road. Worth the peace of mind in my opinion.
 
Nice. I looked at an '06 Civic Coupe, but the e-brake was right where my knee rests. I got the RSX and there is nothing but empty space there! (and a lil more pow-ah)Anyway, for the 1st (two you) oil change, I'd put in some Havoline dino for the high moly. Moly is essential to break-in as it makes the cylinder bore's cross-hatching wear smooth, rather than being "rolled-over". I did Havoline 5w-20 at 2500mi, Havoline Synth at 7500 and various synth oils since. If I did not already have a big stash of synth, I would use dino 5w-20 (Motorcraft or Havoline) on a time-based interval. I do every 3 months, which is 8000mi for me. I use Mobil Clean 7500 in my older Honda at 4 months interval.
 
Maybe this is "old school" thinking, but I would never change the oil filter on any car every other oil change. The filters are cheap... and why leave a used qt. of oil in the car? Just my 2 cents.

I agree. I plan on changing the filter with each OCI. I just found it interesting that they only want it changed every other time?

My Dad always told me, "If you drian the oil, you put a new filter on!... And make sure you use Pennzoil"

! I do agree with him on the Pennzoil. I was just worried with this car and the extended drains if Pennzoil could hold up?

I picked up a M1 Extended Performance filter today to run with the fill of the old SL M1 0w-20 that I found in the garage.
 
We just use havoline 5w20 and oem honda filters (my girlfriends uncle works as a honda tech, so we get free filters).

i know that oem filters for honda arent the best...but they are free
