Got done changing out the water pump on our Jetta. It was time on the original and was having issues during the winter months not getting to full temp. Anyway, recently I was having issues with the tranny not engaging into 4th. If it did it would take alittle while for it to shift.

After changing the water pump and thermostat the transmission seems to shift alittle better... seems odd. I did change the fluid about six months ago. The cooler is mounted inside the transmission with cooler lines coming out of if.

Does anyone know if water temperature have any relation to operation of a transmission?

If the transmission does not warm up enough, it might not go into TCC lockup. That's what both the Fit and Buick do.

It all has to do with the temp of the engine on how the whole car acts, if the temp was off, the transmission will most likely be off too.

Yes it does. It's inside the transmission.

Go figure. Fixed both issues.

Sweet. Thanks.

Is your jetta a gls? model?

If your having trouble with the transmission shifting the display near the spedo disapears.

On my jetta, every thing worked fine except for it shifting into fourth, and I ended up having to replace the ecm which is under the back seat. Six years later and it still works good.

After that I did have a thermostat problem and it didnt affect the shifting at all.

My car is the same year as yours by the way.

I hope this helps!

The lights for the gears has been out for quite sometime. So far everything is working after the pump and thermostat change... can't explain it.

So this is not a manual transmission?

Interesting to note that a bad WP made it not come up to temp.
I can't conceive of this happening.
The opposite is what I'd expect.

Of course , I note 'winter' was most likely the real problem.

The water pump wasn't bad, the thermostat was sticking open.
