My car has 307,000 miles. Change oil regularly. I like trying new oils. To Restore and Protect or not🤔

I put VRP in my daughters 09 Camry with 252,000 miles because it used 1/2 a quart in the 5000 mile OCI. Otherwise it would have gotten $18 Supertech dumped in it like it has before.

Now I debate about 3000 or 5000 miles for the next change because of the cleaning done by VRP

It burns a little bit. Nothing crazy.
Then it might benefit your engine to use VRP for 4 OCI. However, if you're not careful, it might kill your engine. This is where VRP fans might go nuts and start pounding their keyboards. 😘

To switch your high mileage engine to VRP in a safe manner... For your 1st VRP OCI, I'd change the oil filter at 500 miles, then again at 1500 miles, then again at 3000, then again at next OCI. After that, change oil filter at normal OCI time.

Why? You won't know how much crap VRP loosens up, how fast, or how big the debris might be. I've seen VRP users photos of cut open oil filters with signifigant debris in the filter after only 500 to 3000 miles.

You know what's worse than varnish and carbon stuck to surfaces in your engine? Chunks of varnish and carbon floating around in the oil, possibly plugging oil passages or going through bearings.

Does VRP work? Yes it works as stated by almost everyone that has used it and posted about it, but to reduce its risks the oil filter should be changed more often during 1st VRP OCI.

However, your engine is already doing well with whatever you've been doing, and there's no risk and no extra expense if you keep doing it.

VRP is a slow cleaner, that is why they recommend 4 OCI's. There is no way this oil will kill your engine.

VRP will put everything into a Liquid State, if the OP has gotten to 307,000 miles, I really doubt there is much junk in the engine.

I can see chunks or pieces of Carbon, but chunks of Varnish, again this oil liquifies harmful debris.

I will give you that 1, but I do not think it is necessary.

His engine is burning some oil, so it is doing ok, hopefully after using VRP it will be doing well.

Burns some oil ? Use BG EPR 109 for 2 oil changes., using the same oil you've been using. That stuff will clean the rings of any coked oil stuck to them and should stop oil burning. Also replace PCV valve and hose with new. That can cause oil burning. Don''t bother changing oil brand now, at 307,000 miles. Stick to what you're using. The BG EPR 109 is a fast fix. Pour it in right before oil change. Follow directions on can. It works well. My Honda was leaving a trail of blue smoke on the highway, and it stopped it. Doesn't use a drop of oil now. 615,055 miles. After awhile, piston rings get sticky and gunky from just use. This stuff will clean them up good. Scamazon, E-bay, Walmart has it.

300 thousand miles on a car is a sign of frequent oil changes. Even cheap oil works as long as you keep it fresh.

You should put that vehicle on Mileage Impossible.

I started the site back in 2020 and we have over 500,000 members. But I could use some vairety instead of the 327th Corolla post of the year.
Where? X, reddit, website?

No way that's your group? Wow. I am a member. Pretty cool. I tried to get @50yr Street Mech to add his but he didn't want to.

Haven't you previously talked about how your 3000 mile OCIs with cheap, on sale oil led to no "oil related issues" yet you were burning oil and had coked up rings you had to use an additive to resolve?

I'm sure you can make an argument that it was worth it to use cheap oils all this time, with only the need to run BG EPR etc etc, but it's interesting what you find when you scratch the surface of those claims. People in general have selective memories.

Very commonly repeated refrain here that isn't true. See these excellent posts from @OVERKILL and @RDY4WAR here and here.

I may have overstated the case, but I'm not wrong. For the 1st OCI with Valvoline Restore and Protect in a high mileage engine, you should change the oil filter early. I stand by that statement.

You can search Google and find many examples (threads and/or videos) where VRP worked as Valvoline intended and did not overwhelm the oil filter, which is good. However, you can also find some cases where VRP overwhelmed the filter. So changing the oil filter early (like maybe halfway through 1st OCI) is a good idea and I stand by that statement. Frankly, it'd be stupid not to change the filter early during the 1st OCI with VRP.

Here's an example

The OP doesn't have any reason to use VRP because his engine works fine as is with what he's been doing, but if he wants to use it then do so.

There, you've answered your own question.

VRP in our 2005 Toyota Avalon with 150,000 miles. Change oil every 6 months regardless of mileage (usually about 3300 miles or less) with new OEM Toyota/Denso filter every OIC.
