My 2011 Mustang test drive. Uh Oh...not good.

I always got lucky when I busted up my T5s, as most of the time I would just end up breaking second gear, and then at least the car was still driveable. Not once was I ever left stranded with that car. It was always interesting when the trans would first grenade itself and you'd hear and feel all the bits and pieces moving all over the place in the trans until they settled to the bottom out of harms way.

It only left me stranded the once: When the tail stock exploded.

I drove it home from the track, LOL! I had 1st, 2nd and 5th.

I'm a stickler for this as my 1st car was an 86 Mustang 2.3L / 4 speed. They never used a Mazda transmission in the Fox bodies. Rangers yes but not the Fox cars.

79-86 4 bangers got a 4 speed which was a Ford transmission (FOG) or the T4 from Borg Warner. (both are descendants of the Pinto/Mustang 2 transmission)

86-95 4 bangers got a light weight version of the T5.

YIKES!!

I hope that I NEVER have to experience that sensation with my T56!!

Couldn't agree more with the above!^^^

If I owned/was buying one new, one I would still try to pull every gram I could out of it (after ordering it as light as possible).
Then I would research what it would take to put an Emco, Quaife, or Hollinger sequential gearbox in the thing.

How this became a ford vs chevy i'll never know. BUT, the fact is the chevy fan boys got their feelings hurt when ford produced a stock gt that out-performed a stock ss out of the box. Now that there is a flaw in fords new beast, the chevy boys are jumping all over it.

I tell ya, who cares!!! I love all cars, if they are fast and sexy I could really care less who makes it!

NOT I!!
I LOVE the new 'Coyote' 5.0 'Stangs, and have ONLY heard about the 'Chinatrag' woes on this site.

It would not stop me from buying one, because if the 'risk' of that gearbox worried/bothered me that much I would just swap in something else!

I think the brand bashing is inevitable. I knew that when I started this thread. I have heard a short throw kit solves the issue of bent linkage rods. Anyway, I am not brand loyal. Since this car would be a weekend / occasional commuter car anything fast will do. A physician friend of mine is selling his 2009 Ariel Atom this spring and he will give me dibs if if I want it at a good price. He mentioned this after he heard I was test driving new sporty cars. I am really looking for something that breaks the doldrums of driving a cumbersome truck everyday and will get better mileage. If the Atom does not pan out the Mustang is still in contention. I test drove the new Camaro SS. It's lighter feeling than I imagined. IRS is a plus.

I must say those T56s are bulletproof! In the two years I owned my 98 Formula I made over 250 quarter mile runs (all powershifting) and tons of full throttle blasts on the street and my trans never gave me a single problem.

Yes, the ONLY people I know of (or have even heard of) who have had problems with them are those who are pushing >850 rwhp/tq through them on sticky drag radials/slicks, running

I guess the "new" Ford is same as the old Ford.

They have gotten very smug and arrogant over the past several years and thought because they didn't touch any gov't bailout money directly their poop didn't stink, and because of that you have scads of ignoramuses saying they would only buy Ford because of it. A ready bunch of suckers to be plucked. LOL

Obviously the old culture of arrogance on the part of Ford hasn't gone ANYWHERE. It just went on a short vacation.

The amusing thing is that Ford has really only been a competitive force for the past several years, they have plenty to prove before they have a clean track record.

Arrogance is deadly!

Any derision coming from you tells me I'm right over the target, doesn't it?

Right. So Ford teaming up with a well respected transmission manufacturer (Getrag) to build a transmission for the Mustang (unfortunately in China) means that Ford is arrogant?

I'm not following you here.....

Fantastic 60 foots will test any driveline! That's really digging out of the hole with any of the factory parts. Very impressive drivetrains.

Why?

You take a critical iconic Ford product (LOL) and expect the Chinese to produce a quality product for such a critical application as the transmission?

The fact is that even today QC and quality is not something most folks see coming out of China, and I don't care how you spec the product, there is so much corruption and sleaziness in the business activities there you'd be ARROGANT and a fool to choose China to build something so darn important, even if Getrag and Ford licensed it, designed, and specced it. The Chinese were still manufacturing it.

Also tells me that Ford thinks their customers are to be taken advantage of too .

Just one more reason to "BUILD IT HERE" in the US.

I don't think it was arrogance at all. I think it was being cheap. And I agree that it should have been produced in the US or Canada.

So all the uber paid top executives are hmmm, "stupid" ?

Naw, I'm not buying that, I think those execs think the customers are stupid.

I didn't use the word stupid. I used the word cheap. They thought they could get away with assembling or producing this transmission in China and pocket the savings. It back-fired.

I wonder if either company has experience with dealing in Chinese manufacturing before this venture.... If not, that would explain the results.

How about "incompetent" then?

That's my point though, I mean honestly if these Ford execs couldn't see this coming (WE ALL DID HERE!) then what in the heck are they being paid all those huge salaries and bonuses for anyway. I love stories like this because of all the crows around here that constantly bash the line workers for being paid too much. Well these "highly trained experienced professionals" are not worth their pay for sure.
