Assuming the spider chart is accurate, it looks clear to me.....

Given a choice between Dexos and a non Dexos approved oil, I would take the Dexos every time!!!

Bet it will work great in my Toyota's!

I can't figure out why all the hubbub here. If the following part in bold is true:
Quote:
"GM owners' manuals will state "Your vehicle was filled at the factory with dexos™1. Use of dexos™1 is required". Certain manuals will go on to state:
- If dexos-1 is not available, GF-5 may be used as top-off
- If dexos-1 is not available, GF-5 may be used as top-off and service fill.
Cited: OEM/Lube News Article - link
then it sounds like there is no requirement for dexos1 to maintain warranty.

Yeah, that was a big part of my question. What does it mean for an oil to not be "available"? If my proof that I changed it involves a receipt from, say, Wal-Mart, which sells dexos oil, but I didn't use dexos, can I get the warranty voided?

Yeah Dexron has only been around since 67, LOL.

One of the local Chevy dealers here has the Dexos1 oil now. Looking at about $45 w/tax on a 5 qt change. Local dealers here use Northland for bulk oil.

Just got word that Service Pro (a division of Kendall) has paid the $$ to be licensed for dexos1. Interesting because they are a low-priced synthetic company!
Amsoils new box for their XL 5w30 says on it that it "exceeds dexos1" but I know they won't license. If they did (and I know this is the case for alot of manufacturers) they could NEVER upgrade that oil..

AC Delco is supposed to release a Dexos1 licensed synthetic blend that is made by Exxon-Mobil. Has anyone seen this on store shelfs yet? I'd love to try it.

Kendall? I'm pretty sure it's made by Warren. Either way, we moved our first drum of it tonight. It's quite reasonably priced at only $478 for 55 gallons.

I hate proprietary stuff. It's garbage and just a ploy to funnel some of your $$ their way. Let's not forget what a wonderful idea Dexcool was/is. This annoys me just enough to tip the scale in favor of another Mfgr when it's time to buy another new car--Even though I was brought up by a die hard GM dad.

I still don't see what the big deal is with this. Auto manufactures have had oil cert requirements for years. Why is such a big deal made about it now? Because it's GM??

Has anyone actually seen a retail bottle of oil it the Dexos1 logo yet?

Even Ben and Jerrys ice cream has some proprietary info they won't tell you about. Even if the oil companies told you everything about the formulation of their oil, we wouldn't fully know what they were talking about.

AC Delco syn-blend 5-30 will be around $3 a qt bottled, $2.30 bulk (ie. bring your own container).

All prices from my local GM dealership. Both are currently available.

ASL is "recommended for" GF-4, ACEA A1/B1 A5/B5, and probably exceeds them. (http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/asl.aspx)
You could figure out the % improvement of dexos over GF-5, then compare to ACEA A5/B5 on Lubrizol's spider plot tool.

If I bought a new Chevy Cruze which calls for Dexos 1 5w30 and instead used GF-4 rated Mobil 1 0w30 or pre-Dexos PP or QS synthetic and changed my oil every 5K would I have a problem? How about 6K? I have plenty of these oils in my 'stash' and I would hate to have to buy more (Dexos approved).

My $4000 (GM card and loyalty incentive) ends tommorrow, so by this time tomorrow I'll know if I own the Cruze.

What I thought too..

At one point it may have been Citgo, and I do remember reading in a thread about some MSDS's that had Citgo contact information. I'm almost positive it's made by Warren oil now. I downloaded a product data sheet from the Service Pro website a while back that was named SP-WarrenOilSpecspackaged.pdf and if you notice on that Dexos1 PDS, it says "SPWNDEXOS1" I'm pretty sure the WN means it's a Warren product.
