It does sound like half annoying tick like the others, but half rod knock too. And moving around, maybe a slight exhaust leak somewhere. I agree that would drive me crazy paying so much for a car.

If it were me I'd throw something thick in there to see if it goes away. Wont hurt anything.

I appreciate the thoughts. But I wouldn't feel comfortable running thicker oil. And since the noise goes away when the engine is hotter (and oil thinner) I don't think it would give the results you are thinking about.

Understand. I haven't come out and said this because its controversial..Here goes..

My experiences with M1 have been - if you got a tick M1 amplifies it. Another brand same viscosity can make it go away. The t6 I'm running in the Corolla silenced about 20 simultaneous ticks just like yours instantly. So my first response was change brands. The second was change weight, maybe same brand. Something that stays thicker warm. Neither will hurt. Just to verify its nothing major. Then dump it if your worried. But I understand why you don't want to, expensive machine. Keep us updated!

I have a Black 2009 Z06 that I purchased used from a GM Dealer here in Vancouver British Columbia just before Xmas last year. It had 29,927km on it and was in very good shape. I purchased the extended warranty til 2015. I have been very busy at work and not driving it much but when I started it up the last few times it was making the exact same noise as yours hence me surfing the net for answers. It usually starts after about one minute at idle and stops once warm (4-5 min). I just assumed it was a lifter not getting enough oil at first because it has been sitting. It never does it when warm or after a drive. I plan on taking it to my local GM dealer in the very near future so it is at least on record just incase. From reading as much as I could on the internet it almost sounds normal and expect the dealer to say the same. What did the dealer say about yours and I see this is you second motor, what happened to the first?

Sounds like the same as mine. Takes a couple of minutes for it to start after cold startup in the morning then its gone when engine is hot or the RPM gets above idle. There have been a few guys now that say they have the same noise. The dealer wanted me to leave it over night and I never did cause it runs great and my UAO is good and I am down less than 1/4 qt with 3K miles and one track day. Plus my catch can has captured a lot of that.

Any chance you can post a video for comparison ???

I will try to get a video posted for you. I took it out today and no noise at all upon startup....I will keep you updated. Was your first motor replaced under warranty, if so what was the issue and did it make the same noise??

Dropped a valve at 120+mph on the track. Replaced under warranty. Don't remember if had the same noise or not ..... didn't really think about it until got the new motor.

Let me know if you want link of my in car video of motor letting go.

Yes it was a little scary and I was very lucky the engine let go at that spot on the track. I was going 120+mph when I started slipping on my engines coolants that were coming out the 2 holes in the side of the block !!!!!!!!!!

IMHO, it sounds like piston slap to me-sounds a lot like my WRX on a cold start as well. Also, running m1 5w30 made my engine sound like there were monkeys banging pots and pans under my hood.

Yes driving backwards at 120* is not something I really want to do again !!

Don't know if this is useful information, but I have an LY7 3.6L V-6 that had a similar noise at 161K. I replaced the oil filter housing cap that contains the bypass valve and eliminated the noise.

Interesting. First I have ever heard of this.

Mine is quiet when it starts up. But after a few minutes and not warmed up the noise is there. Then after driven and hot the noise is gone ............ !!!!
