Hey guys/gals, I'm doing my first oil change on my 03 BMW 330XI Friday. I bought 8qts of mobil1 0w-40 on sale at napa and was wondering if it would be ok to run it at the factory specd 10k mile interval. It has the BMW longlife cert but didn't know if it would be ok to run in the Florida heat for that long. Any ideas?

If it were me, I would run it 5K and pull a sample and send it off to Blackstone for evaluation. This is a new vehicle to you with an unknown history. Having an oil sample evaluated an alert you of underlying issues, if any exist.

As far as a hard an fast rule, doesn't your vehicle have an oil life monitor? If so, I'd go by that instead of a time/mileage rule.

It does. It can suggest changing oil as rarely as every 20K miles, depending on your operating conditions. The OLM in that car is fuel consumption driven.

10K miles on M1 0w-40 shouldn't be a problem though, under most conditions.

If it weren't okay in Florida heat, they would say something.

These cars are designed to run at top speed with the pedal to the metal for hours on end, even in hot weather. I think you'll be fine.

Yeah I read a bunch of good things on mobil1 0w-40 and am still learning. Am reading up on the differences of oil weights though from the BITOG guide

Oh and this car is driven on the interstate everyday for about 10 minutes, but, to and from work is about a 35 min drive one way so the oil should get to normal temps everyday.

My OLM usually goes to 20,000 miles as well although last winter with a lot of very short trip's it indicated changing and with only 6,000 miles and 16 months so I think it is more than just fuel consumption driven. If anything yours should be more sophisticated than the one in my older BMW.

Nevertheless, in your climate with the way you drive I'd definitely go one year or 10,000 miles with M1 0W-40, whichever takes longer, unless the OLM intervenes.

I've done some tests in the past. Mine is definitely purely fuel consumption driven. I'm not sure what logic they used in '96 models. The fuel consumption based OLM was only used for a few years. After that, they switched to a dielectric sensor.

If you have not done so since you owned it, change the differential and gear/transmission oil too with recommended Red Line products per their website.

I plan on doing that in the late fall. This car is awd so I'm looking at two differentials and the transfer case

Motul's Gear 300 is a very stout GL-5 75w90. I would recommend that for the rear differential. I believe factory fill was SAF-XO if you didn't have the LSD, -XJ if you did (in which case you'd need a 75w140).

Oh and had the transmission flushed 2 weeks ago with Maxlife. So far so good

. The transmission shop said the fluid didn't look bad but it did need to be changed.

I owned a 330 but now I have an M3. M1 0w-40 is great oil but I wouldn't go over 10,000 on any oil. I have run our Passat to 7,500 miles on it. I think BMW's can be a little harder on oil than some cars because they are sports cars and used as such.

e46's also can have sludge problems so I would't push it, I think its the Crank case vent system that can get clogged

Owned BMW's in the past and just picked up another one. Honestly, I've had nothing but great things to say about M1 0W-40. That and Shell Rotella T6.
