i do alot of diesel performance work(cummins, powerstroke, dmax) but i got the idea, why not start a mobile oil change service. in the 15 mile radius/area where i live, there are 2 quick lubes, owned by the same person, neither with good service or friendly workers(as said by so many people i know who went there). i developed a good rep in the community for auto repair/maintenance, and id like to be competetive with the quick lube places. id also replace air and fuel filters etc., if needed. would it be best to buy my oil in bulk from auto parts stores, like some 12 quart cases at a time? for conventional, id go with PYB (5W20, 5W30,) and Napa Gold filters, and recommend 4-5k ocis to my customers. for Synthetic, id go with quaker state and Fram XG.

for diesel vehicles, ill most likely use Mobil Delvac 15W40 or Chevron Delo and oem filters if possible. my only problem is i dont know what to charge them. say for instance, id be changing the oil on a 7.3 Powerstroke. it takes 15 quarts. so that would be 4 jugs of Delvac, at 13.37 each, and a Motorcraft filter, at 10 bucks.so to round off about 62 dollars. what should i charge this customer so i come out ahead? same for any othr vehicke, not sure what i should charge. ill also dispose of the oil, and offer the customer the option of me going to their residence, or they coming to mine, whatever is more convenient for them.

I personally charge retail for everything. I'd show them the receipt for a Mobil 1 oil filter for $12.99 even though i bought it on sale for $6.99.

Same with the oil.

Depending on the actual car and how tire consuming the oil change is, i charge $10-15 and that includes, and i always mention it to the customer, my labor, show supplies and oil disposal fee. I come out pretty good seeing as it's a hobby of mine more then anything else and the customer is happy that they got good oil and filter plus quality work.

alright, so like i mentioned with the 7.3, it would be about 62 bucks, so would charging 72 sound fair? it still would be cheaper than the quick lube, and same here, i like the customer to know they are getting the oil change done right, with quality oil and filter. if they have a preference for a certain oil, ill buy that ,and charge them accordingly

Retail price for parts plus $10-15 labor for cars and light trucks, $25-30 labor for heavy-duty trucks if they come to you, $5-10 extra for gas if you go to their places.

You should have coolant, brake fluid, PSF, ATF ... to top off if needed.

For a big truck like that, $80 for that oil change would be CHEAP. I'd personally do $90 just because of the amount of oil you have to deal with during the drain, refill and finally, disposal. A $10 oil change would be with a newer Honda Civic where you can reach the oil filter under the bumper without raising the car and only deal with 4 qts total. Just my Opinion.

Mobil 1 Lube Express is the fastest growing lube shop in the country... When I worked for XOM, they were doing real well and that was only a year ago.

Edit:Never mind... I read your "Mobile oil change service" as "Mobil oil change service".

I would use oil which ever on sale + bulk on sale and rebates. Same for filters. Amazon with prime might help, lots of oil and filters with fast free delivery. I found some(20+) oversized and older model filters for $1-2 which are non popular anymore, but it's not making them bad

Don't forget about RT6. It's not a Mobil product, but a great syn diesel oil for good price.

One other thing to consider is what happens if one of your customers has a engine failure? They will probably come after you with a blood sucking lawyer so some sort of insurance will be a good idea, but adds extra business costs.

Mobilaltima,
You will need to purchase filters and oil from a oil distributor and auto supply in your area and receive a jobbers discount then charge a minimum of 50% over retail prices or you will not be in business for long. Research what other company's charge for mobile service even if they are not in your area it is a good starting point to make a decision and reward a customer who recommended your service to others. I am a fan of NAPA filters also so I would recommend Napa Silver for conventional 3-5k and Napa Gold for synthetic keep in mind Pro Select Napa filters are know their jobber grade . Any NAPA store should be able to sign you up as a jobber possibly for both oil and filters.

Good Luck,

Toto.

It will be tough to get the oil at a decent discount consistently. The quick lube places are buying a few hundred gallons at a time. NAPA doesnt give any discount to shops unless the oil is on sale, IMO you will huting around a lot for oil deals, and even then theres usually purchase limits. The best for syn is usually when M1 goes on sale for 5.50. If you have a tax ID you can get M1 from Mercedes dealers for 5.50, and the BMW 5w30 for about 5.90. We usually just charge list prices for oil and filter and no labor, but this is a brick and mortar shop where we consider the oil change something to get people in the door, therefor no labor charge. When it is on sale we usually stock up, but this can mean a $1500 order for 0/40, 15/50 and a little 5/30. If you have alot laid out for the oils it can take time to get it back.
