Mobil 1209 Cut Open photos???

Well I've been cutting filters open for a while now, and can nit pick any of them. I cut a napa gold 1516 open tonight and still can't figure out how the Bypass valve actually seals against the bottom of the filter element. Metal on metal seal!!

search button doesn't seem to work. I always get "nothing". I'm not really going to use the M1209, b/c it's way to expensive to be replacing every 5k under warranty on a brand new truck. So I'm probably stuck between the Wix, PureOne & maybe the thailand D3 Toyota filter for $5.

I use the same size filter on my Tacoma. Try the Motorcraft 400S for $3.57 and you won't be disappointed. I have a Baldwin 243 on the truck and will cut it open after the 5k run on this oil. The 400s is different than the Purolator Premium L20195. I just looked at both of them and the 400s is heavier with the Silicone valve.

I have an M1-204 cut open, it would give you a general idea.

*IF* he had a problem and had to have the truck towed into the Toyota dealership for warranty work with the Motorcraft filter there WILL be questions with problems.

Stick with the CORRECT spec'd filter.

Take care, bill

they "spec" a filter that is shorter than the 4.0 OEM filter. the wix, purolator etc all list a short L10241 which is for the older 3.4's and 3.0's. the 4.0 takes a "taller" filter, even with toyota filters. Toyota dealer tried selling me a short filter saying it was correct, told him, no... look in the computer for a '09 4.0. BINGO!! He was wrong.

I would love to see the M1204 cut open, please email or post pics.

I need to look at Baldwin too. The PL20195...real flimsy, and leaf sprung.
As for the Thailand toyota filter you get at the local dealership... From what I've seen, nothing to write home about. No silicone ADBV, no end caps... jeez. Nothing but a $3 filter that's marked up to $5+tax.

For comparison, a Purolator PureOne PL20195 equivalent:

Construction is very similar.

Can you use the L20195 or M1-209 on your Toyota??? You use the bigger filter right?

Yeah I can. Plenty of room. The stock 4.0 Filter is about 4" anyway. So the L20195 SHOULD be the listed filter for this app.

Thanks for the pics TurboLuver!! Can't believe M1's are Leaf sprung. Any difference with the grey/blk can? I like how they have the bypass valve built into the bottom endcap vs the 2pc wix. The only listed app that is proper is the Baldwin, they differentiate between the short filter for older toyotas and the taller one for the 2005+ 4.0L.

What is the can thickness of the yellow P1's now? Probly have to scrape that paint off to get a true measurment. Toyota is using .020" cans, Wix is using .015" cans.

Shoot me a PM with your info and I will send you a Baldwin B243 for you to try. I should have a full case in the next two weeks.

I have a black can M1 on my car right now and I am pretty sure it has a coil spring instead of the leaf spring in the older gray can. I will know friday, as I am due for an oil change.

The PureOne can thickness measured .025, the gray M1= .034 and the NAPA Gold 1516 was .025

Sweet. PM Sent. I'd be interested if the new blk can M1's are coil or leaf. But no matter what... I can't justify paying $13 for a filter that HAS to be changed every 5k under warranty. Unless I am able to find them at wal-mart as mentioned. But my #1 priority right now is seeing how Baldwin mounts the Bypass valve. This whole Wix 2pc metal on metal thing is bothering me. Anyone else? You'd think they'd put a O-ring or Gasket in there.

The Black can M1 I cut open had a leaf spring.

It has a leaf spring, I must have been thinking of the NAPA Gold, it is also black, but has a coil spring set-up.
