Synthetic oil technology was technically pioneered by the Germans during WWII. Later advancements were made and the product made its way into aviation where synthetic esters became increasingly common, being used in turbine engines. Many of the big oil companies, including Mobil, were involved in producing these synthetic oils.

Hatco was one of the producers of these Esters and Al, impressed with the high heat handling abilities of these lubricants, worked on developing one that was more suitable for use in automotive applications. AMSOIL was born and they were the first to manufacture an API-approved synthetic oil for automotive applications.

Regarding the "Generally superior" remark, since both companies produce a wide range of products, that's a statement that needs significant qualification.
