I just started using Mobil 1 Synthetic in my 2004 Mercury Sable. Would it hurt the engine to leave the oil in there for 5000 miles? I am also using the Mobil 1 long life oil filter.
 
I don't think so. I'm using M1 and a PureOne filter on my 2006 Monte Carlo, and changing as per the GM OLM, currently I'm at over 7000 miles on this interval, with ~8% oil life remaining.
 
Regular Mobil 1 should be good for at least 10k miles....

Heck, a regular dino won't 'hurt your engine' after 5k miles...
 
roadman, do you have the DuraTec motor (24V) or the Vulcan (12V)? If it's the Vulcan, that motor is VERY easy on the oil and a 5,000-mile OCI would actually be overkill. I regularly did 10,000-mile OCIs on my '99 Taurus Vulcan. It now has almost 70,000 miles and the internals are clean as a whistle. I'm less familiar with the 'Tec motor, so I don't know if it's harder on the oil, but in any case 5,000 miles is not an issue.
 
I have used a lot of Mobil 1 and feel good about going 6,000 miles on any engine. I have had UOAs done and they backed that up, including one at almost 10,000 miles. Still, I have a compulsion that makes me change it at 6,000. From what I have heard you should not use the extended (EP) oil for the short oil change intervals. Just use regular Mobil 1.
 
Is there any difference between the M1 regular oil and the M1 EP. I don't car what the marketing says, I wonder if they are the same product in the bottle. Are they telling us that EP is to compete with other synthetic oils and the regular M1 competes with GIII oil's?
 
Regular M1 should last 10k easily. However, I don't have having filter more than 5k, so I use Purelator Plus and replace it every 5k. It cost 1/3 the price of M1 filter. When dealing with synthetic, it is fresh filter that really matters.
 
Mobil 1 should go 10K with no problem... and I wouldn't use a Mobil filter, especially for a short OCI. Go with a $3 Purolator or a Motorcraft filter for about the same $$$.
 
I forgot to mention that I am having to use Purolator Plus filters now because the regular Purolator filters adbv would quit working at around 7,000 miles. I am hoping the better adbv on the Plus filters hold up for 10k miles.
