I've been lurking around on the site for years, but I finally registered this morning. I've been searching for hours for a solid answer to a question I have had for awhile now. Should I switch from regular Mobil 1 to the Extended Performance? I own a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 with 38,000 miles. I have used Mobil 1 with a Mobil 1 Extended Performance Filter for about 31,000 miles, and I change my oil every 6,000-6,500 miles which shows about 35%-40% oil life on my OLM. Mobil 1 Extended Performance would only cost me about $4 extra, and I thought well I've been using an Extended Performance filter, why not the Extended Performance oil if it's only a few dollars extra (even though it might be overkill). Yes, I know I probably change my oil too often, and yes I completely trust the accuracy of the OLM, but I do what I do. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Austin

If you plan to up your OCI to 10k miles, id agree to drop the extra few bucks on the extended performance.. but otherwise dont bother. I doubt there is any benefit to it. Although if its only a few bucks more I guess setting your OCI to 7500-8k miles would already make it worthwhile from a price perspective. I will let the others chime in on their experiences and UOA experience on the 2 products.

As I understand it, the Extended Performance has a superior base stock. Its not just marketing hype. For an extra seventy-five cents a quart, it seems well worth it.

Let the flame wars begin.

Also, compare what your oil life monitor says when you use the extended performance for 6-6.5k miles to see if it shows that you have more life remaining. Im curious to know if the OLM will tell if the oil will last longer..

To my knowledge the OLM does not sample the oil, but it uses many formulas from everything to RPMs, engine temp, times in each gear, etc. to gauge oil life. It wouldn't know the difference from burger grease to Mobil 1, even though I would!

If your dumping your oil after 6,000 to 6500 hundred miles, there would absolutely no benefit going to Mobil EP. It's a 15,000 mile oil. It's not a better oil than the regular Mobil 1 it just last longer. I would just stick with M1 you where using and start following the OLM little closer, perhaps down to 15% minimum. As for the Mobil 1 EP filter for the miles you are using it at, it has no added benefit. A Purolator P1 filter would probably filter better. Those extended drain filters are great if you use them for what they where designed for, extended miles(15,000). Since they have more holding capacity, but with that comes less efficiency until they start loading up a bit.

For your OCI there will be no advantage of EP. Save the money unless you plan to extend your OCI.

x2

Bump your mileage to 10,000 miles if you plan to go the EP route, which is an excellent oil. If you don't switch, bump your OCI with Mobil to 7,500 miles (you more than likely could go longer but would need to do an UOA with TBN to ascertain).

Supertech Oil from Walmart. Cheapo filter as well. 5000 to 6000 oci. That should quell your worries.

UOA are great at giving confidence. Before I got one, I would start to panic around 4k miles.

GM designed your truck's OLM to work with a worse oil than M1. Run the OLM to 5% with either. You should put some trust in the engineers; they generally do a good job on stuff like this.

Thanks for the quick replies, I went ahead and bought the regulary Mobil 1.

No thanks! I paid a lot of money for my truck, and I plan on keeping it a long time. I'd much rather spend the extra $5 a month on premium synthetic oil and a premium filter. If Mobil 1 is good enough for Corvettes from the factory then it's good enough for my GMC.

Millions of Chevy trucks are LUCKY to see oil changes when the OLM goes off with ANY bulk fill oil and their engines run just great! (My used to me 2004 is such a vehicle)

Personally I'd follow the manual but if you want to continue the syn route then what you are doing is fine. No NEED for the syn and ESP Mobil 1 EP IMO.

Take care, Bill

I think you should, but I would change the oil and filter every 7.5 K which should help defer the cost and should be an easy OCI.

Eventually do a UOA at 7.5 K get the results.....if you can push it longer and further, switch to a filter like Napa Platnium or Fram Ultra etc. Then you can push upward as the UOA determines.

I would stick with regular Mobil 1. If your going 10k or more, then go with the Mobil 1 EP. There is a guy on the board here that runs Mobil 1 for 10k with no problems.

^^^THIS.

We just put the M1 EP 5w30 with an M1 filter in my son's 3.5 G6 GT (which previously has recieved ONLY 5w30 PU), which probably has a similar OLM.
We will DEFINITELY run this OCI past 10K miles, regardless of what the OLM states is left.

I'm running a blend of 4 quarts of Mobil 1, EP, 5w-20 and 2 quarts of Mobil 1, 15w-50...which states, right on label, that it's a "Extended Performance", Full Synthetic Motor Oil.

I have no OLM in my 97, T4R but I plan to run the blend for 12K or 1 Year, whichever comes first. The K&N filter, with the filter mag wrapped around the filter, should easily do 12K.

I'm very sure that the inside of my engine is clean, after 2 Kreen treatments last year and a run of Diesel oil last summer, 12K should be a breeze.

IMO....Use the Mobil 1, EP, oil with confidence and let it run the full cycle to get the best benefit from the product.

Are you blending because of an oil consumption issue or another reason?
