Please reveal your "hearing" source!

Just curious! Did this "hearing source" say why an oil manufacturer like Mobil-1 with group IV synthetic that is higher standard & cheaper than the lower group III Syntec -- would worry about inferior-selling Castrol Syntec?

Just curious!

If you read here a lot you will see many believe it is pure group 4. Which it was many years ago.

I have heard from an industry insider that Mobil 1's current formulation is different then the original. Its current basestock is not all group 4 ( PAO ). The current basestock is a blend of group 3 and group 4.

I would say you heard correctly and that the formulation was changed. However, to say they changed the formula to compete with Syntec does seem to be a stretch. I don't know the true reason they switched, but I bet if you called and asked Mobil you would only get a half truth as an answer.

"I heard on the internet" Self explanatory
"I heard from an industry insider" What kind of industry? Lubrication formulation or some sort of operator? A competitor?

Where's the Beef?

Does it matter who his source was? No. He's asking a question. If they changed it wasn't to compete with syntec. If anything it might be possible to want to go with a cheaper formulation process. It seems that most are full synthetics but who knows what's 100% synthetic. Who knows. If it works in your car for 3,5,7, or 10,000 who cars how it's formulated?

I thought mobile 1 was group 1 and group 3 that made it a group 4? isn't that how it works? a mechanic told me this once 30 years ago, and he had been a mechanic forever so he knows everything.

So why would Mobil 1, the leading Synthetic motor company, change its formulation to compete with # 2 (or 3 or whatever Castrol is)?
Formulations change over time for everyone, it's the nature of the business.

Maybe his source was the Amsoil dealer I met at Cleveland's Cuyahoga County Fair. Swore up and down Mobil1 was all Group III. In Dually's defense, on most topics, when a guy who knows cars says something, he's usually mostly right.
When a mechanic opens his mouth on motor oil, he will probably recite something that's been outdated since 1984, wasn't ever true or flat-out doesn't say anything.
"Quaker State will sludge up then kill your pet turtle!"
"If you go to synthetic, you can't ever go back..."

Hey let's leave Amsoil out of this. Full of crap people exist in all walks of life.

We need to not have this same post over and over and and over again. Honestly I'm not sure why I'm responding to this one, I usually don't. Enough of these and we'll start losing our valued experts.

I wish I had skills. Skills enough to assemble a FAQ forum for all these silly repeat questions.

in '04,i post a news worthy insight that i gained from talking, face to face, with the mobils
head chemists.i was at the sema show, and stop by the mobils booth and asked 'who could tell me or answere a question about base stocks'..i was told
mobil 1 is a blend of base stocks.each grade is different.
p.s.
i wished i had his card.

The horse has died a slow death. Without documentation or reference material in writing, this myth needs debunked. Mobil 1 is a Grp IV Full Synthetic until such time as it is proven otherwise.

Way to say it Pablo!!! YOU SAID IT RIGHT!!!!There are so many Dips***s out there that don't know much about anything and then spout off about things they heard, thinking the person that said is right. There are alot of people out that should stay up on there knowledge for their jobs but don't. They are still back in the Stone Age with their knowledge and still talk crap about newer better products, because their company etc. told them this 30 some years ago.. Times change and so does their world of oil products..

So to those who want to talk facts..Get them right before you put your foot into your pie hole.

I like both Amsoil and Mobil1 products. And I don't care what anybody thinks about it... My vehicles will get the best I can AFFORD at the time. Money talks and ** walks.
