Came off of my daughter's 2011 Sonata 2.4, has right at 2000 miles on it after 6 months. Goes about a mile and a half at a time, so never gets warm, hence the short OCI. Filter looks good, no tears or other problems that I can see. The black junk is all soot, at first I thought the inside of the can was painted black. Fram Ultra XG9688 went back on and filled it with Delvac 5w30.

Wow! I thought that came off of a diesel.
Yeah, it's nasty. This isn't a case of neglect either, I've owned this car since new, it's had full syn 5w20 or 5w30 since new, and it's never gone further than 4000 miles.

To me it looks like the filter worked and trapped all that soot inside, instead of letting it flow in the engine.
You know that the engine makes the soot, not the filter, don't you?

I don't get why did you say Fram "went back on" like is was good thing.

Yeah, I'm aware that Hyundai's GDI technology causes these things to soot up pretty bad, but thanks for pointing out that my oil filter doesn't produce soot. Very helpful.
As far as the new filter goes, I almost always get asked what oil and filter were put back in/on. Just saving those interested from having to ask.

Sensible maintenance based on use and observation, that's smart. Some are using 20k advice on the boxes as a rule. I guess a scanner could tell the temp it's getting up to.

I know all about Hyundai engines and soot, see my thread below and good luck with yours 👍

Except the stuff that might have went through the bypass valve, which nobody can see or tell for sure.

What oil did you drain out
Thanks
Last fill was Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. I've cut filters from this engine open before, and they didn't have the soot content this one did, so I'll be interested to see if there's a difference after this OCI using Delvac.

Thanks!
Need to take that thing out on the weekend and work it, there's going to be other issues if it never makes operating temps.
I do, as often as I can. Daughter doesn't like me taking off in her car to run errands.
