Have you seen the new 1-quart bottles of *0w-30* Mobil 1 ? At the top of these green bottles with green caps is written in big, bold letters:

"Exceeds 5w30 and 10w30 warranty requirements"

Six months ago, an experienced individual with 30 years of automotive knowledge (a mechanic holding numerous certificates) said to me online in a car forum to avoid using 0w30 oils in a car whose manual calls for 5w30 ! He warned of possible dire consequences. It's kind of funny. And one or two others said the same to me.

Yesterday, I saw the bottles at Walmart. By the way, the 0w-20 bottles of green Mobil 1 say something similar:

"Exceeds 5w-20 warranty requirements"

One thing I'm leery about the Mobil 1 quart bottles, though, is their specs. The back of the bottles said they only qualified for ACEA A1/B1 , not even A3/B3 , or preferrably A5/B5.

I know in the past I've seen some 1-quart bottles of *5w30* Mobil 1 list ACEA A5/B5, so I don't know what's up with this new batch of *0w-30* Mobil 1.

The back of the 5-quart jug of 0w30 didn't mention ACEA at all!

Not sure what requirements it exceeds, Chrylser flat out told me in an email that if I used 0W-20 in my 08 Jeep that called for 5W-20 and there was an oil related failure the warranty would be void! I saw something similar on Mobil's website and emailed Chrysler to find out. I would love to switch to 0W-20 at least for the winter months.

Well Chrysler is FLAT OUT WRONG and stupid for even saying that.

I don't understand how Chrysler could say that to you if Mobil 1 placed that statement on their 0w30 bottles:

"Exceeds 5w30 and 10w30 warranty requirements"

It would seem to me that the attorneys at Mobil must have gotten on the horn to each of the car manufacturers, to verify their statement. But that's only speculation on my part.

Totally agree. How foolish - surely Chrysler has someone on board with a tribology background or??? And people ask me why I challenge the manufacturers......

In my opinion, sounds like the auto manufactor trying to get out of warranty work. This is just another reason why I like to use Amsoil...they warrant their product due to the oil causing the damage.

When encountering this kind of response, be shure to ask good follow-up questions to qualify the person as having any idea what they are talking about.

I called Mobil this afternoon, and asked about using 0W-20 in an engine that was spec'd for 5W-20. Their reply was this, Mobil has tested the product and feels 0W-20 is a better oil in all instances where 5W-20 is spec'd PEROID!!!!!!!!!!! However if your vehicle calls for ONLY 5W-20 and is under warranty you should only use 5W-20. Bottom line is this, if there is an engine failure due to oil, and the oil that was spec'd was not used, the auto maker will wash their hands of it. Will the oil company pay? I am willing to bet they'll look for a way out too, and then what hire a lawyer?

There is one exception according to Mobil. If an older vehicle is spec'd for 10w30 and you use 0w30 odds are it will leak. Just passing along info I got from calling the 800 #.

I do agree with Dr. Haas 100% but a warranty can tie your hands behind your back.

Hi,
AJ - I totally agree with you. The advice often given freely by such people is at best "interesting"

At retail store level I have heard advice being given that makes me cringe as I walk away.....

More importantly how and the world would they know? Even if they did a UOA they do not test it for it W rateing they just give the SAE viscosity or SUS. So unless you where a big mouth and told them they would never know!LOL Stupid people volanteer too much information when they should just answere what is asked of them and keep the rest to themselfs!

yeah, they are just telling your warranty will be void. not that the oil won't work. but if there any engine damage at all, any, the manufacturer will void your warranty as an escape goat. it will be on your dime.

Just to clarify, Chrysler said this? Or a Chrysler dealer said this?

Thinner engine oil is not universally better...
Even on cold starts.

Case in point the company that I work for supplies an all expenses paid '98 Expedition.

With over 220000 thousand on the clock the quick lube shop back speced the engine to 5W20. On cold and hot mornings alike each time it was first started the bearings and/or other internal engine parts sounded as if they were looking for a point of easy exit.

On the last OCI I requested 10W30 and all of the start-up knocking has ceased.

Sometimes thicker is the only solution. I was of course also having thoughts of a new truck as well.

Yes I know there is much to be said for certifications, diplomas, tribological studies, etc.
And isn't funny how the real world sometimes flies in the face of higher learning?

I emailed Chrysler asking if I could use 0W-20 in place of 5W-20, and was told in an email that I could only use 5W-20. That's the oil spec'd and that was the oil that meets warranty requirements. Under no circumstances should the oil be left for more than 6 months. It was the oil recommended in all climates and conditions. I was then instructed to look at the Owners Manual and fill cap. LOL..

I wish I saved the email!
