I purchased some Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15w50 on closeout and PP on special. I have an 8.1L GM the specs a 5w30. I want a thicker oil can I mix PP and Mobil EP?

I always stick to the same oil brand manufacturer when mixing.

Why did you purchase an oil weight that you cannot use by itself?

You must have the same Compulsive Oil Purchase Disease (COPD) that's spreading rapidly at this BITOG site.

6 bucks for the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15w50 5 quart jug! Your right about the disease, can't help myself. The Mobil 15w50/10w30 EP mix works well in my 8.1L. Not sure of mixing non similar brand oils.

Generally it is probably better to stick to the same brand, but it shoudln't make a noticable difference 99.5% of the time. It will be fine.

I wouldn't do it. I just got back an email from Castrol where I asked about mixing two of their syntec oils...they said even though they were the same line, the chemistries were so different that it wouldn't be a good idea.

Let's face it, people. We have a problem similar to mild OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Our quirky behaviors aren't too bad on the whole, but, we aren't really being very productive.

maybe mix the 2 in a cup and let it sit and see if they separate out for a certain period of time?

wouldn't be a bad idea, although i suppose heat would be a factor that would help the 2 oils mix inside the engine.

Spring for some M1 to mix even at Walmart prices.
Savew the PP until you get enough to add PP as a PP run. If you use the m1 mix now you'll have 10000 miles to find your additional PP. That's probably enough time to build up even more odd matches in your stash or your missing qts of either PP or M1.

Why would anyone ever mix oils? 15W-50M1 flows like a conventional 5w30, or at least has roughly the same cold temp. pour rating...

I used it my old Civic during the summer months, and it was fine...
