I was looking at some half full bottles in my garage today. I had 12ozs of Valvoline 80-90w gear oil and 20 ozs of Chevron Delo 15 40w and mixed them together I was thinking about putting it in my Harley Primary what do you think??

I was kinda wondering if that would be ok. You hear of engines and trans with the same engine oil being used for both but not gear oil. I would throw it in my lawn mower for sure. Wait a minute you said primary thats not the engine oil is it? That might be way more suitable than in an engine.

I wouldn't advise it. The 40w oil would be fine, but the 90w is too thick in your primary. Transmission - yes. Primary - No.

80W90wt gear oil is really 20W50 on a Viscosity chart. look and see.

lots of different opinions here I was hoping to hear a bunch of sure it will work. Now I am wandering? FXRider I was thinking like you I thought the gear oil was similar to 50wt oil..

Harley only puts that in there because they wan't you to buy THEIR overpriced oils. Just like when they used to say not to use synthetic oil in your bike. That was until they started selling THEIR brand of synthetic oil. It has been proven for years by people, using just about every brand and type of oil made that Harley's aren't that delicate, or picky about what oil is used in them. Some work better then others, and most work better then what Harley wants to sell you. I've been using the cheapest Gl-5 rated gear oil I can find in my bikes for years with no issues. And I've been running Rotella t diesel oil in my primary also. I have one of the quietest, smoothest shifting Harleys out of anyone I know. Remember that every bike manufacturer buys it's "branded oil" from the lowest bidder. So how can that best the best there is?.,,,

I've run Rotella in the Primary for years with no problems. I've also used ATF.

Would the gear oil be clutch compatible?

There are clutches in limited slip (posi) rear ends.

Many gear oils are not kind to yellow metals.

Sure, they have add packs to try to combat that tendency but there appears to be an inordinate number of stator failures for those using a GL-5 gear oil in the primary chaincase.

The stator (with all of those nice copper windings) on your bike is located behind the compensating sprocket (front of the case).

The Harley recommended fluid (Formula+) is a mineral oil base in the 40 grade range with little additives. The primary chaincase is not a candidate for high tech lubrication.

A nice 15w40 Delvac, Rotella, or other diesel oil works well here.

I use Amsoil 20w-50 in the engine. Amsoil 75w-110 in the transmission. And Amsoil 10w-40 in the primary case. Works very well, and shifts smooth.

Most run Mobil-1 20W50 in engine, Mobil-1 75W90 in tranny & mobil 10W30 in Primary. and you can get it @ any autoparts store
