Toyota To Restart Mississippi Auto Plant

Quote:
The Mississippi plant will make 150,000 Corolla compact cars a year, moving back to North America production Toyota had temporarily shifted to Japan when it pulled out of a California joint venture with General Motors Co. in April, Toyota said. Initially, it had said it would make the Prius hybrid in Mississippi.

Makes good economic sense - building Corollas in MS will be much less expensive than it was in CA.

Quote:
Toyota's decision to build Corollas at Blue Springs, a nonunion facility, drew fire from the United Auto Workers union on Thursday.

UAW President Bob King told union members at the UAW national convention that Toyota transferred Corolla assembly from the union-covered Nummi plant to Mississippi "just to get lower wages and benefits."

Anyone know how much lower the wages and benefits are at a non union plant compared to a union plant?

it's all relative; lets not kid ourselves, they open up down south because the unions don't have influence there. plus, cost of living is lower, so you don't 'need' to make as much money down there. $15/hr in MS goes a lot farther than $15/hr in MI.

I don't blame Toyota for walking away from NUMMI.... GM got up and walked away from it first. And let's face it, for obvious reasons, California is not the most attractive manufacturing environment any more...

By many of their past actions, the UAW has made their own bed.... now they get to lie in it. However, they continue to point the finger of blame everywhere else.

As far as the UAW complaining, I say let them complain. It isn't helping anything, it isn't going to get Toyota back in CA. And with it's emissions and taxes, Mississippi is probably a better choice anyway. Thank you Toyota, for moving production back where it should be. Now just move production of the Prius, Yaris here too and I'll be even happier.

"We're going to pound on Toyota until they recognize the First Amendment rights of those workers to come into the UAW," King said at the UAW national convention in Detroit.

Oh boy.

Text of the First Amendment:
Quote:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Maybe they think Toyota's actions prevent them from exercising their right to assemble and petition the government?
