I recently was ask to service my first Mercedes C-Class. Not knowing what they been using, I decided to use the OEM oil which 229.5 category. How good is this 5-40 oil when compare to others like Mobil.

LazyDog, I would prefer an oil that has mulitple certifications (VW, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes, SN, GM, maybe BMW too). Also, consider using a Mercedes 229.51 or 229.52 oil instead for lower SAPS these days since sulfur in U.S. gasoline is disappearing.

Also, Ravenol tends to use the best base oils (PAO, esters with very little GroupIII/III+) for a clue it might be better. Anti-oxidants in other brands could be better & trump base oil selection, so go by the biggest pile of specs you can find and you can't go wrong. Example: Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 has one of the biggest set of performance specs from so many perfromance tests it passes, we can call it proven. Similarly, Ravenol VMP 5w30, both oils with HTHS about 3.5, perfect for a c-class, meets many performance specs.
... blauparts.com for the Ravenol, amazon.com for the Mobil1 ESP and some flavors of Ravenol, also some autoparts stores.

I can't find a technical data sheet for the Mercedes house brand oil, and their safety data sheet is totally absent of any legal information. You can tell a little about an oil looking at it's NOACK and pour point, although, as said above, there is no replacement for a huge pile of qualification specs !

Not sure if the bottle is worth the extra 5 dollars but I bought it at FCP Euro not too bad of a price. Few more dollars than Mobil quart.

The car almost takes 8 quarts.

Mobil What?

ACEA 0W40?

Mobil 1 isn't magic, and the core grade ILSAC isn't even a traditional synthetic oil - even though they "misspeak" and label it as one on the bottle.

Very true. https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/foru...0-15-quarts-for-64-08-with-free-shipping has the Castrol for cheap. In store prices similar too. That's for the high saps 229.5 spec oil, a good choice until you convert to low-saps stuff later to keep valve deposits down.

We hear about the value of going low saps, except people have used 229.5 high-saps for years without too much problems reported, so fine to use it:

Well I was going to say you paid too much, but if you got it from FCPEuro, I guess it might be worth it as long as you take advantage of their lifetime warranty which even covers oil. I'm not about to do that though, I think they'd go out of business if too many people took them up on that particular offer and I like to use them for other parts.

You're right, but it must be region-dependent. In Germany the bottles say "Powered by Petronas" and "Made in Europe."

LazyDog, can you post a photo of the back label?

WOLF59,

I been a long time customer from FCP and do used their lifetime warranty on some parts but stuff like oil, oil filters, gas filters never do the warranty exchange. They have to make some money in some stuff. I even have a personal account number!

We had discussed before that it probably even is location dependent, and the AMG thing may be different, too. They've got a pretty big deal with Petronas, and I'm sure in at least some parts of the world, the MB oil would be by them. Then there's the Sinpec thread. In a place like Canada, it would make little sense for them to go past Mobil which even has a bulk product meeting the MB full SAPS spec.

I've been helping my god daughter with the oil changes on her Benz, but we have decidedly not gone to the dealer for oil. You only do that for a Toyota here.

Hi
FWIW I have used PETRONAS products made in Italy. I presume due to the connection with Selenia and Fiat.

PETRONAS is the Oil used by Jeep Dealers in UK.

Petronas acquired Selenia, which made nothing but excellent oils. Selenia was top tier manufacturer on par with Mobil1, Castrol, Shell etc. Petronas acquired name, and basically these oils are products of Selenia know-how.
MB229.5 is extremely stringent specification. Is it worth or even better than Mobil1 0W40 FS, and or Castrol 0W40 or especially Castrol 0W30? Highly doubt.

My 2 cents:
It's purely subjective and being called "placebo" here, but my MB runs better on vanilla M1 0w40 than on the dealers OEM 5w40 (which you've got)
I personally believe this MB oil is either Petronas or most probably 5w40 Mobil1 Formula M since it makes more sense to use Mobil as a supplier in US (Petronas supplies oil for EU)
As long as the oil has valid 229.5 spec and is listed here https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.5_en.html you're good to go.
Do use your oil with confidence it will serve your MB well

Another 5 cents on parts:
1. I highly recommend the website rmeuropean for getting parts, couldn't find better price for things like oil/air/cabin filters elsewhere, as well as boutique oil like Motul is very reasonably priced.
2. M1 0w40 is on Costco sale ($28 for 6qts https://www.costco.com/Mobil-1-Full-Synthetic-Motor-Oil-0W-40.product.100169676.html) as well as you can get 5qt from Walmart for $17.88 after instant $5 rebate https://mobiloil.com/en/promotion/mobil-promotions/hot-wheels

My daughters 99 ML320 V6 has over 220000 miles on it using this oil and some 0-40 Mobil 1. OCI was about 5-6k miles not 10k. That is a smooth and solid vehicle.
