RAID-3 uses a single dedicated drive for parity, but few used this RAID type.

Actually cheaper to buy a standard Promise IDE controller card and modify it to a Fastrak RAID controller. 200 Ohm resistor from pin 23 of the Promise bios chip to ground and flash the BIOS with the FastTrak BIOS. I have a Promise Ultra66 and Ultra100 card that I modified for that and ran fine for years. Probably find step by step instructions with a little Googling.
I ran a 0+1 setup on four 60GB IDE hard drives. This was back in the days before the crazy large drives we have available now. Think I paid like $700 for all four drives off ebay - and that was cheaper than anywhere else at the time. Ran it pretty much 24/7 for quite a few years. Eventually replaced all of drives one by one due to failure - luckily all under warranty. Eventually lost it all when two drives failed at same time.
