Decided to drain the Factory fill to see how bad. What ever this FF oil is, it had plenty of moly in it. First OCI, mostly city driving, I changed to Motor Craft 5w-20 syn blend with a fram EXtended gard oil filter (the 10,000 mile syn filter) Now I have some hiway miles on it and not sure when next OCI should be. Highway mpg avg 24.2 city 16.4 Hope my copper drops. Engine runs strong and smooth.

2010 Mazda CX-9 AWD with 3.7L v-6 273 hp / 270 torque

My Blackstone report:

Don't worry too much about what you see in the first analysis of your Mazda 3.7L high wear metals and silicon are to be expected in the beginning, the metals are from wear-in of new parts, while silicon is from sealers and sand casted parts. Now that this oil has been changed, you should see better results next time, even if you ran the next oil up to 2,000-3,000 miles. Universal averages show typical wear levels for this type of engine after about 4,300 miles on the oil. No fuel or coolant turned up in this 5W/20 . Check back to establish a wear history.

I'd have left it in - those factory fills (Honda as well) have extra moly in them to help with break-in....

Honda calls it break-in oil but Acura says its actually liquid assembly lube.

I suspect its like the old GM EOS. You used it on the cam as as assembly lube then pored the rest of the pint in the engine. If you did a early oil change you were supposed to put another pint back in.

Wow T-bird! 650 miles on FF? By todays standards, thats really old school. Even I go 1000 miles on the FF.

Just having a little fun with ya :)

Yes that was old school thinking, I guess I panicked after I was shown a UOA from a new Kia changed at around 2K and it had very high wear numbers. Anyway I was thinking about all the little wear metals in my new engine just before I was to go on an 800 mile highway trip and decided to change it out.

I did add 1/2 a can (about 5 ounces) of Lubro Moly / MOS2 to the engine at about 1600 miles to replace the factory Moly that was drained. Picked up the Lubro Moly at a NAPA auto parts store.

cheers,

Wow, such a new engine and already an oil add.

There is debate as to if the Moly 'does help' with the break in or if it simply helps to run out any ff fill to help 'seat in' the engine.
Regardless, an oil with plenty of Moly is good as it has you covered for both sides of the debate.
