That's a tough one. My sister has a Mazda6, but it's the 4-cylinder version which has a Mazda engine. Since both the 6s engine and the MPV engine use the same block, I'd imagine they would use the same filter.

EDIT: Okay, I think I found something. This is where I buy OEM filters for my Mazdas, and it lists the same part number for the MPV and the 6s. So I'd say both engines use the same size filter.

Thats the same as the Nissan filter-PL14610. You can run the K&N HP-1010, Mobil 1 1-110, or any filter that is recommended for the Maxima Year 2000 and earlier. I run the HP-1010 for my Sentra 2.0 L

I'd stick with the genuine OEM filter for now until ALL the filter catalogues are updated for the new car.

But, if you have faith(warranty issues/dealer BS/....) and don't care for OEM, there is no reason not to run ANY filter that you want if it crossreferences with your original filter which you say is the FL-820s(22mm Ford size).

Be sure that you are 100% correct that the OEM filter on that Mazda6 V6 is the FL820s.
If so, the HP2010 crossreferences(i think) with the 820s and can be used.
Don't use the 14610 and its equivalents. It has a 20mm filter thread and shouldn't fit.

The filter on my 6 is light blue. It says Motorcraft FL-820S on it. It's not the white Motorcraft I'm used to.

Buster,

Off topic:

I looked at this car and the Accord V6. I simply could not see the extra $3,000 I would have paid for the Honda. My sticker was $23,700 I paid $21,700. This car is worth 25,000. It is built like a vault, quiet, and beyond description in terms of fun to drive. Outside of North America it is the hottest selling car in it's class. The engine is smooth as silk, I have the JATCO 5-Speed Manu-Matic. It is a blast to use. They are very reliable automatics used by Nissan, Mazda, Rover, Jag, and others. Don't cofuse Mazda/Jatco autos with the Ford/626 transmission fiasco. This is our 4th Mazda. The DW drives an 02 MPV. They are as reliable as any Honda, and the data backs it up. Make sure you drive the 6 and Accord back to back.

It's been a long time since I have owned a car I take out for a drive at 10p after the kids are asleep.

Good Luck. : )

My 6s came with a Motorcraft FL-820S filter. It has the 3.0 DOHC Duratec V6. I want to run a K&N 2010 filter. This is the same filter I run on the DW's 02 Mazda MPV. It also has the 3.0 DOHC Duratec V6. The exception is my 6s has VVT and different Mazda Heads, vs. the standard Ford Heads on her MPV. I am finding all types of confusing information as to the type of filter for my 6. Purolator lists a L14610 as the filter, but a L24651 for the DW's MPV? They are the same short block? The L14610 is not much larger than a Hot Dog. No way am I putting it on my 6. Can I put the K&N 2010 on my 6s? It came with a FL-820S!!!

Can anyone hlp me with K&N and Purolator numbers?

Thanks,
Mark.

Not sure about the filter question. Off topic, how do you like the 6? In about 4 months I'll be looking for a new car/truck. I looked at the new Infinity G35 but it's overpriced and too hard to get around here. I like the look of the new 6. Honda Accord is another option.

These two filters L14610 and L24651 have two different thread sizes so something is wrong. My guess is your car is too new to be correct in the purolator data base. Sounds like the larger filter is the correct one and should cross ref. to FL-820S. However it does not cross ref. on the purolator web site. It also does not cross ref on the wix web site. Just too new I guess.

Greets,

I just found out about this excellent forum over at the mazda6 forum (www.mazda6club.com). I just wanted to thank you all for taking the time to post all your experiences and knowledge. I've read a few hundred posts and have learned a great deal.

As for the mazda6s...all I can say is if your in the market for a car, make sure to give one a test drive. The car's extremely nimble, has a great exterior/interior, and great passing power. The low end torque is a bit low in the unbroken in cars (ones you usually test drive) but the throttle response/torque improves greatly over time as the engine breaks in.

Also of quick note (I'm sure most of you are aware of this), Price costco sells 5w30 Mobil-one synth for a nice reduced price (23/24 USD for a 12 quart pack).

Thanks again everyone for the great information.

I'll be most likely putting in the K&N Filter with some 5w30 Mobil-one this weekend...as well as some synth Trans fluid.
