Hello,

I have 2004 Mazda 3 2.3L. 90K km on it ...
Im running 5w20

No leaks.. no burning ..

My plan is to switch to synthetic PP or Ams.

Safe ?

Mazda N.A.
Dosent test recommend using synthetics. My Dealer told me same thing...

So im coming for advize here ...
And what about engine noise will it be more noise with synthetic.

Thank U In Advance sorry for my not perfect English

We have a 2007 3 with the 2.3. From 4k to 14k I ran Amsoil 0w-20. I still haven't sent off the sample yet. If you are planning on extending your drain intervals, there is no reason to really use a synthetic. I'm not sure why Mazda is so "anti synthetic". Why would you get more noise? Thats not true at all. Perfectly safe to use synthetics. PP/Ams are good choices.

I think you'll be fine using Pennzoil Platinum in you Mazda!!

I use it in my '08 Mazdaspeed 3 (5w30) with great results. Your non turbo model should thrive on it.

I like PP because it is one of the few oils with the Honda/Acura HTO-06 spec. It also endures the fuel dilution issues that the Speed3 motors subject it to.

Check out the UOA section here at bitog and you'll see PP is a top notch oil!!

Cheers!

Hmm im not sure yet .. im doing a lot starts ... and short runs that why im looking in 2 synthetics... + 40Km+ everyday..
And im looking for better protection.

Does it matter what was using old owner and his changes.. because i just bought this car i dnt have idea

Mazda 3s, don't need Synthetic engine oil. Soon enough you may want to switch to high mileage engine oil though

I've been putting PP Synthetic 5w-20 and OEM Mazda filter in my buddy's 05 Mazda3 (2.3L) for the last 30K miles, we autocross it nearly every weekend, all is well. I would not hesitate to run it!!

Glad to hear about your choice of oils. I just purchased some PP for use in my 2008.5 MSP3, and I'm going to change it tomorrow. I use it in all my other cars, and they run extremely well.

I have a 2007 with the 2.3 NA.
I switched from conventional to Synth at 8000 miles.
I used Mobil 1 5w20. Previous oil was Valvoline 5w30.
Now have 12000 miles on the oil. I can tell you that it did indeed make my engine slightly louder. When I drain this oil I am switching to something other then Mobil 1. I still have about 5 quarts of Valvoline SYNPower 5w30 from a BOGO in march.
Gonna probably use that.

You're wanting the best w/o regard to price, then why aren't you considering Amsoil 0w20. Though I personally wouldn't go that route unless I was going long OCI. PP 5w20 otherwise.

If money is no issue, the RP 5w20 hands down. You would easily get 10k OCIs out of it with great performance. I ran it in my mazda 2.3L with excellent results. The UOA is on this site.

I decided .. to go with 5w20 Amsoil
so can i expect better starts then conv oil ?

is it Amsoil 5w20 Blend ?
so why its more expensive the PP

whats the benefits ?

Better starts? You mean low temps, vs. a conventional group II blend? It flows a bit better....but no 5W-20 will be too bad in this department. The 0W-20 does of course flow better in cold.

No it's not a blend. It's a Group III oil. Different base oil composition, better additive package.

so in other words its better for my engine ?
for wear ?
for harder driving ?

I probably would go with the MotorCraft blend. I see no valid reason to pop for a full synthetic. MC blend has shown excellent UOAs in this and other engines.

I'm finding the synthetic/dino debate moot on a street car as long as the oil is changed before its used up. Wear is more a function of driving style and trips. Modern engines and oils are much improved from 10 years ago. Seeing an engine with spotless internals and great UOAs running on dino oils is amazing.

My 6i has the same 2.3 as the 3s. Since I bought the Mazda to enjoy driving, it sees redline a few times a month. Running Motorcraft for 5k or 6 months seems to be doing fine. I'm considering doing a UOA at the next service since I'm now over 12k miles.
