I've been using the orielly coupons and buying maxlife synthetic in the silver bottle for 3.49 closeout price. I bought the last bottle today and noticed they had put several bottles on the shelf that are red. Looks to be the same, maxlife synthetic, just in a red bottle. Is this maybe some old stock. The UPC codes are the same. The bottles looked a little dusty.

Look at the label, your silver bottles should say "Full Synthetic" the red bottles do not. As NHGUY pointed out, the red bottle is semi-synthetic.

That is the reason I asked, I did read the label. The bottle says synthetic, not semi or blend. The UPC code is identical to the synthetic silver bottle. Also they have the red semi/blend labeled bottles next to this on the shelf with different price. That is the reason I thought these might be older bottles they pulled out of old stock to get rid of.

I had it once, red bottle, it states "Synthetic", not semi "Synthetic", it was at least 6 years ago I bought from Walmart clearance. Silver bottle came after that.

I found an image of the bottle. Note red bottle, full synthetic label. Also it doesn't carry the engine guarantee.

Thanks, I was thinking it might be some old stock as the bottles were a little dusty. With the clearance price and coupon they are $1/qt. I guess they are still "fresh"

Weight has no bearing on the color. 10w30 here is the same as 5w30 maxlife synthetic.

Well the OP saw an older bottle, didn't he? They do indeed exist...

For a little more Valvoline confusion, VR1 conventional comes in a silver bottle, while VR1 syn comes in a black bottle.

Not for me, because hardly any of it is available here...
