Thinking of switching my 80000 mile LS1 over to Valvoline synpower this year. The car currently has zero leaks or consumption issues. Given the age and the mileage do you guys think I should use Valvoline synpower with maxlife technology 5W30, or just the regular Valvoline synpower 5W30?

I am getting ready to do the same thing with me Ram 1500 with 60,000 miles and my wife's Jeep with 36,000 miles. Both are going to Max Life Syn. Why because spoke to Valvoline rep (My dad is retired Valvoline) and he explained that even new engines can benefit from the Maxlife and right now at Walmart its cheaper than the regular synpower. It won't hurt it and it can only help.

Maxlife syn is Valvoline's best oil. The fortified add pack should clean up any gunk from the last 80K miles.

If it's already had a healthy diet of synthetics it won't need the Maxlife because the seals should already be cleaned and getting plenty of seal conditioners from the regular oil.

I've used SPwML in my Honda with 165000 for the past two changes and it all seems good. My car had no leaks or consumption issues either but I figured it couldn't hurt. It has all the same specs and approvals that new cars require so any additional additives for leakage or seal swelling shouldn't be an issue. Says right on the bottle that it's fine for newer cars as well as those over 75,000. Must be true, right....?

Don't try to help something that needs no help. No leaks and no consumption says to stick with what got you there.

When issues arise someday, then switch. In the meantime, I'm curious as to what oils you've been using. It/They all sound like a winner.

If I had to choose between the two options, I would go with regular Synpower. If its not leaking or burning then I see no reason to use a high mileage oil.

This.

Currently running on ACDelco dexos synthetic blend 5W30. My reason for thinking of A Change Is they are no longer going to make this oil. With the new second generation dexos specification General Motors is phasing it out

I agree, but I would opt not to use HM oil in a motor that's in perfect health.

Just my opinion.

The question is does it hurt to? No so why not run the better oil especially since it is cheaper???

I'm from a school that won't use HM oils or store-shelf treatments, until there's a consumption, noise or smoking issue.

I never try to fix something that ain't showing signs of needing any meddlings or repair.

What's interesting is that Valvoline markets their Full Syn HM as better than their standard Full Syn product. At least according to their comparison chart. They show it being better than SYNPower In most categories.

http://www.valvoline.com/our-products/compare-motor-oil

So if you don't want to run an HM version of Valvoline oil you are not running their top tier product according to Valvoline (Or at least their marketing of it).

Anytime an oil contains things that correct problem, that means the base oil must be more robust to counter the more robust HM add-pack, so lubricity does not wane.

It does not mean that an oil package like regular Synpower is an inferior product. It's not inferior if/when those added robust things in that HM add-pack are not needed. So if the stronger add-pack isn't needed, then the more robust base oil of HM synthetic isn't needed either.
