Just out of curiosity, I wonder who sells the most motor oil. I would guess;
1) Penz
2) Exxon/Mobil
3) Valvoline
4) BP/Castrol
5) Store brands (Super Tech, AutoZone, etc)
6) Quaker State

Pennzoil by far. 2 thru 4 are Quaker State, Valvoline, and Castrol. All 3 are very close each and every year. The sells of each brand is so close their positions are interchangeable from year to year. Mobil products are #5 with the caveat Mobil One is the number one in synthetic sells. This is the PCMO market.

Well, Pennzoil and Quaker State (as well as Shell) are all SOPUS companies. They are all different formulations though.

And speaking of Exxon/Mobil, do the even sell "Exxon" motor oil any more? I have not seen any Exxon Superflow in a long time now that I think about it.

Yeah, but notice that Havoline (Chevron) is right up there

Exxon Superflo was replaced with Mobil Special

You can get QSAD change for the same price. It is just as good as Kendall.

I await your evidence....

Quaker State, the ones that say:

So they're putting titanium in oil now?

How about putting oil in your oil....

Yeah I'm surprised a bit by that too. I really do like Havoline as well. Havoline Pro DS may be leaving O Reilly's. It is on special at $23.95 but it is not on their add. Makes me think it is being put on special to get rid of it. Hopefully I am wrong.

Both meet the exact same specs. Quaker State has a lower volatility, higher vi, performs about 15% better at -30C, all I had to state was it meets the exact same specs.

Havoline will have a high percentage due to its 300 Xpress lube locations across the country.

Shell could have been even bigger.
It's an open secret in the industry that several years ago, ExxonMobil offered Shell their entire lubricant business; including Mobil 1.
Apparently Shell ultimately rejected the deal on the grounds that there was too much brand overlap. I suspect it might have made Shell too dominant a player in some markets.
I heard this direct from the horse's mouth so I'm assuming it's true.

I don't think so. Up here, we use the Esso brand, and the only things I've seen lately with the Esso brand remaining (rather than being switched to Mobil) are washer fluid, antifreeze, and brake fluid.

SonofJoe: When it comes to brand overlap, nowadays, particularly in North America, could anyone in Shell claim to want to avoid brand overlap with a straight face? The only place they've gotten rid of any brand overlap whatsoever are in HDEOs, European oils, and a couple drivetrain fluid examples. Aside from that, I could try a different Shell SN/GF-5 5w30 in my G37 for each oil change, do it every three months on the severe service interval, and have a different product every oil change for at least four years. Heck, it would take two years to go through the Pennzoil SN/GF-5 5w30 lineup alone.

I would think Mobil would be higher ranked ? ... Perhaps it's because they are better known for synthetic category than dino .
