I was considering using Marathon fuel and am wondering if anyone has had any "bad gas" or other similar problems with it. I understand it has STP adds in it and am curious about the quality of the fuel. Up until now, I have been using Chevron almost exclusively, and Sunoco when there is no Chevron available.

If it makes any difference, I live in West Central Florida. I appreciate any info you can offer.

I've used Marathon gas from time to time and have never had a problem with. I don't think the STP additive makes any difference one way or the other. Try a couple of tanks and see if it works for you.

The STP additives are probably unlike anything you'd buy in a bottle at walmart, formulated and diluted to meet EPA specs and meant to "stay clean". The concentrated store stuff is supposed to "get clean".

If it's "top tier" fuel that's a good sign. Buy on price or convenience.

I read online that Marathon is not considered a top tier fuel. They do have a lot of locations here and are usually 5 or 10 cents cheaper, so if it's a good quality gas I might buy it. I read online some people experienced reduced MPG with it.

Any info is appreciated here.

Had a problem 2 weeks ago. Went to a different Marathon than i usually go to, Van ran like the number 2. Refilled and no problems after that.

If they're consistently cheaper see if they have a credit card that gives another 4-5% off.

Im in central Fl and I have used Marathon several times without any problems. Its the closest station to me and I have always used it for my yard equipment without any issues (for whatever thats worth).

as long as it doesn't leave any "deposits".

XOM's stations are not Top Tier, but I'm sure they are just as good. They must be economizing, and don't want to pay the fees to join the club.

Exxon/Mobil/Esso and BP both claim that their fuels meet Top Tier detergent levels easily, but do not wish to participate in the program and they feel carmakers should not be dictating standards, rather it should be a partnership between the auto and oil industries. One of point of view.

Sunoco (USA) doesn't participate in Top Tier, but claims they have "significantly" more additives than the EPA minimums and have so for decades. What this means, I don't know. Sunoco Canada is Top Tier, but it is different company and no longer related to Sunoco USA, save for the trademark.

I used mostly Mobil gasoline for years in my Honda (long gone) and Sunoco in my Ford Ranger and neither has had much carbon buildup compared to friends' cars. My BMW doesn't have enough miles to tell yet - usually use Sunoco gasoline. Not too many Mobil around here where I moved.
