I shave 6 days a week. My facial hair is pretty thick. I use a Schick Hydro and usually replace the blades once every 4 or 5 months.....

A week?

I use Gillette Fusion blades. They last me about a month/5 weeks or so, assuming I shave every single day. Sure, the lube strip disappears after the first week, but it doesn't mean the blade is no longer good. But yeah, I certainly agree that it's not in the manufacturer's best interest to sell you a blade that lasts a long time.

FYI, Q&A from Gillette's page:

Quote:

Q: How long will the Gillette® Fusion® ProGlide™ cartridge last?

How long a cartridge lasts varies from person to person, as it is dependent on many variables such as beard toughness and thickness, beard preparation, shaving habits, and skin sensitivity. The Gillette Fusion ProGlide's reformulated Indicator Lubrastrip™ will provide you with a visual cue - it fades to white - when optimal shave conditions have been reduced. When this happens, you may want to consider changing your cartridge for an optimal shave. What about up to 5 weeks of comfortable shaves?

Why do electric razor blades stay sharp for years? They're not any kind of fancy ceramic blade. Maybe it's because you don't use water, and therefore they suffer much less corrosion?

Double edge for me, too. I recently made my most expensive blade purchase ever - $30 for 100 Personna Medical Prep blades. Best blades I've tried (for me) so far and they're actually made in the U.S.

I am curious about something related to this topic. A water softener salesman told me a long time ago that soft water would allow razor blades to last a lot longer. Can anyone here with a softener or naturally soft water corroborate that?

I use my DE blades for a week. They seem like they could go longer than that, but they are so cheap and a week is easy to remember. I can't say if it shaves as closely as a multiple blade setup but there is something about it I find very satisfying.

Here is what I think, having used both foil and rotary type razors before going back to blades. Part of the way an electric razor achieves a close shave seems to be by pulling the hair up slightly before cutting it. That seems to make the sharpness of the blade less important. That is probably also why I ended up with ingrown hairs and aggravated acne when using electric razors. The blades in electrics definitely wear and should be replaced every couple of years. They may seem to be doing fine, but you can definitely tell a difference when you replace the blades/screens/foils.

I may be wrong on the mechanism of cutting, but that was what I thought I was observing during my electric razor days.
