Does anyone have access to Manheim's auction data? Was helping a friend determine the current value of a 2013 Nissan Rogue AWD, the insurance company is looking to total it, didn't even want to fix it.

Wanted to know what they were going for on the auction block lately.. If anyone could look that up, I'd greatly appreciate it! (y)

You would want retail values, not wholesale. I assume the insurance would make him whole, in other words retail value of a 2013, with similar miles and condition, plus any sales taxes.
Research this on Auto trader. I would pick top 3 retail numbers within 100 miles.

This is very true, but I don't think any of them retail 11 year old cars.

Oh I agree, it's because if they total it, they'll subtract the auction/wholesale price of what they could get for it when my friend keeps the car to repair it themselves. Wanted to get an idea of that level..

This is where Carvana's and Carmax's inflated values will help you. Carguru's is OK but probably not as sky high as them.
thanks for that idea! just getting started trying to find the value..
WHOA!! I knew used car prices were up there, but WHOA.. good info.. thanks for giving me a much better idea than I was thinking..

Why is your friend hesitating? Insurance pays off on the full retail price, something he could never hope to get if he tried sell it on his own. Take the money and celebrate.
oh heck ya they'd take the full retail price, but they were waiting to see what "games" insurance would play in low-balling them for the totaled payout price minus auction price for the owners keeping the car to fix it themselves. But if insurance offers a good price, they'll take it! Not looking to buy a new or another used car right now, better to fix this one..

Next step is to see what the body/collision shop says is the estimate.. And no they don't have a problem using either junkyard oem (like bumper covers) or aftermarket headlights.. Never thought the OEM lights were that great to begin with!

Thanks to everyone, this helps a lot!(y)

UPDATE: Insurance company is saying the Rogue is a total loss and only offering 50% of full retail as compensation! My friend is older and not a car guy, wanting me to deal with the insurance company on his behalf. I did research (thanks to everyone here) and within 100 miles of my friend's place, found 3 prices.. $12k, $10,500, $13k. No way will he accept basically 1/2 price..

I remember someone or two here on the forum had this, think it was a 2008 Accord, 5speed.. and they got the full value of their car after insurance low balled them. What would the next steps be to make sure they get the full price they're entitled to?

And is it possible I act as a rep for them??

Ask how they arrived at that price.. and then ask for them to send you their comparable.. and shoot them full of holes. IE show they arent really comparable.
Sometimes they are stale (not for sale any longer or sold) sometimes the options or even the model doesnt match etc.
Then submit specific comparables. Expect it to drag out.. their main tactic is delay and deny.

if you are at a total impasse after 6 weeks or so tell them you are filing a complaint. Sometimes that will make them give a little. otherwise file the complaint.

Disclaimer: We have some insurance guys on here.. I'm not a pro.. I've made out ok .. but they do this stuff everyday..

I feel for you, a drunk driver totaled my crown vic which was parked outside, it’s been 5 months now. I was originally quoted $6529.50 is what they appraised it at, awesome I only paid $3800, first offer was only $1200 I laughed and told them absolutely not because before this I was dealing with story after story and each time myself and other family members who are involved were told totally different things. It’s July now and the last time I heard from the claims representative was in may I basically gave up, now I’m being offered full amount if I sign a waiver that she refuses to explain to me what it’s signing for. I’ve had to now pay around $7k out of pocket between down payments and sales tax for the new vehicle, lost a week of work and have to take both of my children (under 10) to therapy. I’m not signing anything without it being explained to me but oddly enough they’re now asking for a list of the above out of pocket expenses and any documentation I may have. I’m not sure what’s going on but best of luck to you if it’s nationwide because they are for sure not on your side.

thanks Rand! (y) your post helps a lot in how to move forward, I did remember about filing a complaint but this gives me a path to follow. My friend was going to move forward and pay to repair the vehicle out of their own pocket and wait out the insurance company, that's what they decided. But now we can just wait out the insurance company and let them play their games.

thanks for your story.. I'll tell my friend what happened to you, but I like the idea of being able to file a complaint with the state of michigan. It's an election year, amazing how things might get done. Nope not making it political just saying how it could work in my friend's favor.

Typically they deduct the salvage value if you want to keep it, which is different than the auction values. The salvage value is based on what would sell for in wrecked condition at a Copart or IAA auction.

As others have said, get the comps to see where their valuation is coming from.

I used to work in insurance and also just went through this myself in May for my wife’s Suburban. They paid me $54k for it, which was right in line with what I was finding, if not a bit higher. I had them throw in $3 or $400 for tint and I think that was it as far as adjustment to the value.

Not to hijack but are you sure the driver has enough property damage limits to repair your house and pay for the vehicle? That looks expensive and may be time to involve your homeowners insurance if you haven’t already.
