I have used Castrol GTX in every one of my vehicles until tomorrow. I was at walmart today and decided it was time to give synthetic oil a chance. Pennzoil Platinum was on sale for $20 but the Mobil 1 was $22 for the 5 qt. jug, . I went with the Mobil 1 5-w20. Never thought I would spend more than $20, let alone $30 on an oil change and filter, but I felt good about it.

My car has seen the GTX @ 1,400, 5,200, 10,000, and tomorrow im switching to Mobil 1 at 13,000. I plan on running it for 6,000 miles, and sending it in for a UOA to get a better idea of how long I can run it.

Should I run it longer for 6,000?

My driving is very mixed, short trips, long trips, "spirited driving". Hope that helps

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

Many of us that run M1 do OCI's around 7.5k to 10k. You could change it 6k if it makes you comfortable since you've never run FS before. I say 7.5k.

How much did you pay for your car? I am sure 30 is nothing compared to it.

My decision to use GTX was never price based. It is just what my dad has always used and what he showed me to change my oil with. Reading alot on here has led me to believe that a high quality synthetic like mobil 1 could be better for my car in the long run, and I just want to give it a try.

Any other opinions on how long I should go on the first OCI?

What does the amount paid for the oil have to do with the cost of the cars . About a year ago I got to go for a ride in a 97' boat with 2 rather large MTU high speed diesel engines .They each looked twice the size of an of an engine on a semitruck .Could you imagine the cost of those engines? Guess what kind of oil they ran in the engines ? It was Rotella HDEO around $10.00 per gallon at Walmart. Would you think the owner of the boat was not concerned of the service life of the engines?

Only thing I can find in my manual and maintenance book is a 5k interval.

Sooooo, the whole reason I started this thread was to see how long people think I should run the M1 for the first time before I get a UOA.

Anyone have an knowledgeable opinion?

Run it the first time 5k.

Then the 2nd time @ 5k THEN get the UOA.

Go from there. (depending on the UOA)

Take care, Bill

I second Bill's recommendation!

I changed my oil at 2500 miles to M1 AFE in my Venza to get the factory fill out. I changed again with M1 AFE at 5K and will do 5K oil changes. I'm sure I CAN go longer but my own peace of mind is worth the extra few bucks. Plus I wont run into any problems IF for some reason my Toyota has engine problems and they question my OCIs. Everything I do is documented and I copy the receipts. Plus I like the easiness (if thats a word) of knowing when to change the oil...5, 10, 15, 20 etc etc-----VenzaTRD

Agree with Bill. You want to do at least two oil changes before doing a UOA. That way all of the residual Castrol gets taken out. I would say 7.5K would be a good number to go to on your third change.

Should have bought the PP 5w20 and gotten the $15 rebate!!

However, I am sure the M1 will serve you fine...

That seems like such a long time to go on the oil, but the car is mostly stock and I don't run it that hard. I guess the UOA will tell how long I can really go.

I just wish I didnt have to wait 10,000 miles to find out!

Totally true. 5K oil change interval is so easy to keep track of. Either you have 5 or 0 in your thousands spot on your odometer regardless of mileage and you know its time. I guess 10k OCI woild be easy too with whenever there's a 0 in the thousands spot, but anything else can get confusing if you don't keep track.
