I was reading about these and I was wondering if anybody has any experience with them. Are they really needed or is the use of a good oil or transmission filter sufficient. They claim to capture fine metal particles in the oil, but wouldn't your regular Oil or Transmission filter do the job if you are using a quality filter. I'm a little skeptical, what do you guys think?

I have one on my minivan..and recommend it ..or get some other form of auxillary filtration. Automatics are way too expensive to rebuild these days.

On my other vehicles I'm going with a seperate spin-on mount, but the Magnefine is about the simplist way to go ...especially if you don't have a lot of room or the desire to be a dentist.

They're a throw away item. The filter has a bypass in it ..and a large washer magnet (it matches the end of the filter). I believe that these flow inside to outside. It looks just like a miniature cartridge filter inside ..with mesh reinforcement on the exterior.

My first one was installed a long time back (pre-BITOG) when I had my trans serviced. When I went back to the same guy (still pre-BITOG) he said that he probably wouldn't change it. He didn't.

They apparently sell a ultra trick version of it ..but I don't know the details. It's very expensive. If you have the room, install a spin-on hydraulic filter and mount.

They surely aren't what you call "cheap" ..but they do allow any autotrans, regardless of space limitations, to get the benefits of auxillary filtration.

I am using one on the Auto Trans. and one on the PS return line of my 2001 CR-V. They've been on for the last 2 months. I figured, they will only help my venerable Honda Auto transmission as there is no serviceable filter installed by Honda. So far so good, nothing special to report.

Will replace them after about 30K kms or 1 year and will then know if they helped in any way.

I actually bought one to put on my 2005 CR-V. But when I asked to have it installed my mechanic pointed out that Honda had already put an inline filter in my CR-V. I have no idea how good the Honda filter is - probably made by Fram like their oil filters. So at 30,000 miles I will replace the Honda unit. I don't yet know if I'll use a magnefine (very good product) or a Honda filter (no warranty issues).
